Dane County Waste & Renewables in Madison, WI has a current vacancy for a Limited Term Employee (LTE) Solid Waste Engineer.
Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.
Note to applicants – for the 2026 budget year, there is a 1% reduction in wages. This is already reflected in the hourly wage above.

DEFINITION
Dane County owns and operates the County’s landfills, household hazardous waste collection site, a construction and demolition recycling facility, various other recycling programs, and a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Plant that converts landfill gas to pipeline quality RNG. The department’s goals include increased waste minimization, diversion, recycling, and beneficial use and the intent is to achieve this with the development of a sustainable business park, or Sustainability Campus. This classification is responsible for project management and engineering duties for the Department of Waste & Renewables including landfill, recycling, and compost facility design, construction, operations and maintenance.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIESProvide technical engineering and project management support. Plan, organize, oversee and supervise the work of internal and external parties involved in the design, construction, and execution of construction projects. Develop and issue bid specifications, construction drawings, requests for quotes, bids, and proposals, contracts, contract change orders, contract amendments, and assist in updating budgets. Collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction contractors and act as the County’s project liaison. Respond to work delays, emergencies, and other issues that may arise during construction. Perform surveying, technical engineering, and construction documentation, to ensure project complies with all building and safety codes, and project is properly documented to ensure accurate as-builts. This classification will also be assigned a broad spectrum of responsibilities including, but not limited to, financial management, contract administration, and internal and external team leadership for a variety of department projects.
Education, Experience and Special Requirements
Education, Training and Experience:
Any combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
Special Requirements:
Must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record and access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies or unexpected maintenance events. Must be able to be on-call for night and weekend work. Also refer to ‘Physical and Environmental Work Requirements’ section below.
Certifications/Licenses:
WDNR Solid Waste Facility Manager and nuclear density gauge training and certification must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire.
Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job’s responsibilities. Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:
Ability to perform "light/heavy work" defined as being able to lift up to 40 pounds and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Ability to wear a respirator. Physically capable of running light equipment; operating hand tools and power tools; climbing ladders; entering and working in small confined spaces; working with poor lighting; and working in conditions of wind, dust, rain, snow, ice, extreme temperatures, and excessive noise.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of professional engineering principles, practices and methods related to solid waste management, recycling, and resource recovery. Knowledge of legal requirements and standards related to landfill design and operations, hazardous waste disposal and recycling. Ability to interpret and produce engineering drawings to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair and document operational issues. Knowledge of maps, deeds, plats and plans, and surveying techniques. Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and evaluate work. Ability to prepare plans, bid specifications, and cost estimates. Ability to work independently or as a team to analyze problems, develop solutions, and implement sound alternatives. Ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working internal and external relationships. Ability to lead teams and manage complex projects. Ability to be creative, flexible, self-motivated, organized, and quality and customer service oriented. Knowledge of various applicable software applications including AutoCAD, Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word and Excel).
