ABOUT THE POSITION:
This position will sit within the MOSAIC teams, part of the Global Innovation and Delivery (GID) organization. MOSAIC is Fluence’s algorithmic bidding and trading software platform, leveraging artificial intelligence, advanced price forecasting, portfolio optimization, and automated market bidding to enable energy storage and flexible generation assets to participate optimally in wholesale electricity markets.
As a Senior Optimization Engineer, you will partner with cross-functional teams to develop and guide our market-leading optimization and bidding product, Mosaic, for renewable energy and battery storage assets in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM). You will be able to identify the most impactful projects, proactively remove impediments, and successfully drive towards key initiatives. In addition, you will provide support to other members of the Optimization, Forecasting and Analytics teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build and maintain optimization models that translate market rules into compliant, revenue-maximizing asset scheduling and dispatch strategies.
- Integrate probabilistic price forecasts for Energy and Ancillary Services into optimization workflows in partnership with forecasting teams.
- Design and manage data pipelines that prepare market and asset data for optimization and store model outputs in production databases.
- Analyze optimization performance daily and continuously refine algorithms to adapt to evolving global electricity market conditions.
- Develop and enhance Fluence’s Mosaic bidding platform for battery storage and renewable energy assets.
- Implement software engineering best practices,including version control, CI/CD, automated testing, and scalable architecture.
- Deploy and operate containerized optimization services using Kubernetes, ensuring reliable, high-performance production environments.
- Collaborate across teams and lead by example, fostering strong communication, inclusion, innovation, and continuous learning.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Bring to Fluence?
- Energy Market & Optimization Experience 5+ years developing optimization models for electricity market bidding and dispatch.
- Global Electricity Market Expertise Deep understanding of market design and bid optimization across regions such as the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Japan.
- Deregulated Market Knowledge Hands-on experience with markets such as CAISO, ERCOT, MISO, PJM, NEM, and similar competitive power markets.
- Optimization & Solvers Strong background in stochastic and convex optimization using commercial solvers such as Gurobi, Xpress, or CPLEX.
- Python & Production Systems Advanced Python skills for building and deploying optimization models, including CI/CD, testing, and containerized environments (e.g., Kubernetes).
- Software & Product Delivery Experience delivering production systems in agile or lean development environments.
- Communication & Collaboration Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and clearly explain complex technical concepts.
- Advanced Education & Modeling Master’s or PhD in a relevant field (e.g., OR, CS, EE), with bonus points for experience in game-theoretic modeling
