ROLE OVERVIEW:
The Senior Specialist–Environment and Sustainability will serve as the primary lead for environmental compliance, sustainability initiatives, and decarbonization strategies across concerned Karachi Ports. This role is pivotal in ensuring that all terminal operations are fully aligned with organisation's framework, local Pakistani regulations, and international best practices.
As a dedicated focal point for all ESG-related matters, the Senior Specialist will coordinate closely with NP HQ and terminal management to cascade ESG KPIs and sustainability targets into operational scorecards.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- 8 years in environmental and sustainability roles within ports, logistics or industrial sectors.
- Masters degree in environmental science or environmental engineering
- Certifications: ISO 14001 Auditor (mandatory)
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
- Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve the Environmental Management System (EMS) and related control procedures in alignment with Organizations ESG and HSSE framework and international standards.
- Develop and maintain terminal-level environmental and ESG plans, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance and operational consistency.
- Coordinate environmental emergency preparedness and response planning, including drills and incident management.
- Conduct regular environmental audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify gaps and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure integration of environmental risk management into terminal operations and decision-making.
Environmental Compliance & Regulatory Alignment
- Ensure full compliance with applicable local, national, and international environmental regulations, permits, and standards.
- Act as the primary interface with environmental regulators, port authorities, auditors, and lenders on environmental compliance-related matters.
- Engage proactively with regulators, port authorities, auditors, industry partners, and local communities to ensure transparent communication and compliance.
- Prepare, submit, and manage all statutory, regulatory, and lender-required environmental and ESG reports.
- Monitor contractor and third-party environmental performance and embed ESG requirements into contracts and projects.
Sustainability, Decarbonization & Circular Economy
- Lead the implementation of sustainability and decarbonization initiatives across Karachi terminals in line with the Groups decarbonization roadmap.
- Drive programs related to energy efficiency, emissions reduction, waste minimization, and resource optimization.
- Promote circular economy practices within terminal operations, including waste segregation, reuse, recycling, and value recovery initiatives.
- Monitor and analyze energy consumption, water use, waste streams, and GHG emissions.
- Integration and monitoring of sustainability objectives, ESG KPIs, and decarbonization targets.
- Collaborate closely with Group ESG teams on sustainability strategy development and execution.
Environmental & ESG Performance Monitoring and Reporting
- Establish and maintain robust data collection, monitoring, and quality control systems for environmental and sustainability metrics.
- Coordinate ESG data management and reporting in line with recognized frameworks (e.g. GRI, CSRD, GHG Protocol).
- Prepare accurate, timely, and high-quality ESG reports, dashboards, and KPIs for terminal management, corporate teams, regulators, and external stakeholders.
- Analyze performance trends, identify risks and opportunities, and recommend corrective actions for continuous improvement.
Project Support & Technical Advisory
- Provide technical input and oversight for environmental impact assessments, permitting, and approvals for new projects.
- Ensure environmental and ESG requirements are embedded in project design, construction, and operational phases.
