Co-op Engineering/Environmental
(4-month term beginning May 4, 2026, potential extension to 8 months)
The District of Sparwood is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Co‑op Engineering / Environmental Student pursuing studies in municipal engineering, environmental science, water/wastewater systems, civil engineering, or urban planning. This full‑time term position offers hands‑on experience supporting municipal operations, utilities, and environmental initiatives.
Nestled in the Rocky Mountains of southeastern BC, Sparwood offers exceptional outdoor recreation including skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, and wildlife viewing. Employees also receive an Active Living Pass, which provides free access to our pool, gym, ice rink, squash and racquetball courts, climbing wall, and select fitness classes.
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Co‑op Student will work closely with Engineering Services and the Utilities Crew to support operational improvements, collect and manage GPS data, refine procedures, and assist with the development of municipal programs and documentation for utilities, roads, and parks.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Act as a Water Ambassador, supporting public communication on water conservation.
- Collect GPS data points and assist with GIS database updates and maintenance.
- Develop Excel spreadsheets to support environmental monitoring and utility reporting.
- Conduct research to support improvements in water/wastewater operations, contingency planning, and best practices.
- Explore advancements and emerging technologies relevant to municipal operations.
- Gain exposure to water distribution, stormwater and sewer collection systems, and secondary wastewater treatment processes.
- Learn basic SCADA concepts and assist in developing operator reference sheets and manuals.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Comfortable using iPads and mobile applications.
- Proficient with Excel and Word.
- Ability to operate GPS equipment and manage associated data files.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data review.
- Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles and municipal infrastructure is an asset.
- Interest or experience in water and wastewater systems is beneficial.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- High level of integrity and strong work ethic.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence

Salary:
The current pay rates under the collective agreement with CUPE Local 2698 are as follows:
1st year of studies completed - $21.71/hr.
2nd year of studies completed - $23.46/hr.
3rd year of studies completed - $24.64/hr.
