The Internship Opportunity: Health, Safety & Environmental
The Port of Virginia - Virginia International Terminals, LLC is seeking a Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Intern to assist HSE staff with the continued rollout of The Port of Virginia's new safety branding initiatives. This individual will assiststaff with safety and health auditing and document review. They will also have the opportunity to be part of developingcorrective measures associated with the audits.
The Port of Virginia's 8-Week Summer Internship Program runs from June 1, 2026 - July 24, 2026. It has been designed to develop, teach, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students as they explore career opportunities within the maritime industry. Students will have the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to hands-on, project-focused tasks in various departments throughout The Port of Virginia.
What You'll Do: Outcomes & Experience
- Work collaboratively on a diverse team focused on improving safety culture across POV facilities.
- Support the rollout of a cultural transformation plan at one of the country’s leading ports.
- Assist in implementing injury prevention strategies to enhance workplace safety.
- Track and analyze Safety KPIs related to:
- Process Safety
- Behavioral Safety
- Contribute to initiatives that strengthen safe work practices and behaviors.
- Gain hands-on experience in safety culture transformation within a large-scale port environment.
- Learn innovative approaches to injury prevention and risk reduction.
- Understand methods for monitoring and improving safety performance metrics.
- Collaborate with professionals in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) disciplines.
- Conduct audits related to Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) compliance.
- Review processes and identify gaps in safety and sustainability practices.
- Prepare detailed reports on audit findings and KPI performance.
- Summarize data for Environmental Sustainability, Process Safety, and Behavioral Safety metrics.
- Learn and utilize the newly implemented HSE software for data entry and analysis.
- Support the team in tracking and monitoring KPIs through the system.
- Assist in developing and implementing corrective actions based on audit results.
- Follow up on action plans to ensure timely resolution of identified issues.
- Participate in the rollout of a cultural transformation plan at one of the country’s leading ports.
- Gain insight into innovative strategies for reducing emissions in port operations.
- Learn methods for tracking KPIs in:
- Environmental Sustainability
- Process Safety
- Behavioral Safety
Who You Are: Qualifications
- Must be currently enrolled and in an accredited program or graduate program (having completed freshman / first year) during the time of the program.
- Must be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) from June 1, 2026 to July 24, 2026.
