DescriptionPosition Summary
Under supervision of the University Hospitals Authority & Trust (UHAT), the EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) Manager develops and implements programs to ensure workplace safety, regulatory compliance (local, state, federal), and environmental responsibility, overseeing risk assessments, training, incident investigations (like OSHA logs), emergency planning, and promoting a strong safety culture through audits, documentation, and collaborating with management and employees to minimize hazards and protect people and the planet.

Desired Education
High School / GED required. A bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience in a hospital setting will be considered.
Desired Certification
- OSHA 10 and 30 hour training and Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) or equivalent certification is desired.
Desired Experience
- 5-10+ years of progressive EHS experience, including 2-3+ years in leadership, focusing on OSHA/EPA compliance, program development (training, incident investigation, emergency response), data-driven improvements, and leading culture change, with industry-specific knowledge and certifications (CSP, CIH)
- Previous Behavioral Health or Hospital experience with a focus on Joint Commission, CARF, CMS, or DNV requirements is a plus.
Examples of Work Performed
- Policy and Program Management: Develop, execute, and maintain comprehensive health and safety plans, policies, and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA).
- Risk Assessment and Hazard Control: Conduct regular inspections and audits of facilities, operations, and equipment to identify existing or potential accident and health hazards. Determine and implement corrective or preventative measures.
- Training and Communication: Plan, implement, and conduct safety training and orientation programs for all employees, managers, and new hires on safety practices, emergency procedures, and correct handling techniques for hazardous materials and equipment.
- Incident Management: Lead the investigation of accidents, incidents, injuries, and near-misses to determine root causes. Develop and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Compliance and Reporting: Ensure all operations comply with safety standards. Compile and submit all required accident reports and safety performance data to regulatory agencies and internal management.
- Safety Culture Advocacy: Collaborate with management and employees to promote a proactive safety culture, encourage safe behavior, and address safety concerns and suggestions from staff.
- Emergency Preparedness: Develop and maintain emergency action plans (EAPs) and coordinate emergency drills and response efforts.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong knowledge of EHS regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc.).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Detail-oriented, analytical, and strong problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and in dynamic, potentially high-stress environments.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Occupational Safety, Environmental Science) is often required

- The position is an office-based position with regular visits to work sites on campus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the colleague is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk or hear; uses hands to finger, handle, or touch objects or controls. On occasion, the colleague may be required to climb and work in high places, stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. Position may also require work in confined spaces and exposure to different types of outdoor weather conditions. Risk of electrical shock and/or general hazards found in a construction environment are present.
- The colleague must occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift, push or pull up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
