Introduction
- Are you inspired by numerical modelling of reactive multiphase flows?
- Are you well experienced in coupled CFD-DEM modelling?
If yes, you are invited to apply for our fully funded PD position (3 years) on modeling of hydrogen-based direct iron reduction using coupled CFD-DEM and TFM methods. This position is employed at research group of Prof. Yali Tang at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), and in collaboration with an experimental PhD project at the institute of Prof. Stefan Heinrich at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). The starting date is expected to be no later than June 1st, 2026.
Job Description
Direct reduced iron (DRI) using hydrogen has been extensively investigated as the most promising green ironmaking method, driving by both applications of Iron Power (using iron powder as energy carrier) and decarbonization of steel industry. Despite extensive research, the commercialization of this technology is still hampered by knowledge gaps in fundamental understanding of the micron-sized cohesive particle behavior in reactive multiphase flows at scales. In this project, we will combine the state-of-the-art experimental diagnostics with advanced CFD modelling to:
- Experimentally characterize the sticking and sintering behavior of iron (oxide) powders at elevated temperatures
- Link particle-scale phenomena to large-scale process dynamics in fluidized and spouted beds.
With this integrated approach, we aim to deliver a robust foundation for improved process design and industrial-scale optimization. In collaboration with a PhD at TUHH focusing on experimental characterization, this PD at TU/e will work on development and application of advanced numerical modelling, including both coupled CFD-DEM and TFM. Focus is on coupled CFD-DEM, which has been established in previous research projects of Prof. Tang.
As a postdoc, you also have opportunities in applying research funding and mentoring junior researchers.
Job Requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc with the following qualifications:
- Motivated researcher, with a PhD in multiphase flow modelling, fluidization technology, or a comparable domain
- Ability to conduct high quality academic research, reflected in demonstratable outputs.
- Solid background and experience in coupled CFD-DEM (and TFM)
- Strong programing skills in C/C++
- Experience in open-source code OpenFOAM (and LIGGGHTS)
- A team player who enjoys coaching PhD and Master's students and working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.
- A proven ability to manage complex projects to completion on schedule.
- Excellent (written and verbal) proficiency in English, good communication and leadership skills.
Conditions of Employment
A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:
- Full-time employment for 2 years.
- Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale 10 (min. € 4,241 max. € 5,538).
- A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
- High-quality training programs on general skills, didactics and topics related to research and valorization.
- An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
- Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
- A TU/e Postdoc Association that helps you to build a stronger and broader academic and personal network, and offers tailored support, training and workshops.
- A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, as are a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) and a compensation for moving expenses.
