Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the world’s first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The company’s first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt failsafe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to five years without the need to refuel. Portable nuclear power with rapid deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators, and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiant’s unique, practical approach to nuclear development utilizes modern software engineering to rapidly achieve safe, factory-built microreactors that leverage existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor next year at the Idaho National Laboratory, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.
Quality Systems Engineer
Radiant is seeking a flexible, innovative Quality Systems Engineer to balance the implementation of quality assurance requirements within a high throughput manufacturing environment. You will be a leader in the industry as you take an objective look at what controls are necessary to achieve our mission and which should be dropped because they are no longer relevant. The ideal candidate is one who constantly asks “What is the intended outcome” and never settles for “This is how it has always been done.” This is a role where you will take a common sense approach to implementing controls for applications that cannot fail.
As a Quality Systems Engineer, you will have ownership of policies and procedures that govern the way the entire company functions and operates. This is an extremely influential role for people who enjoy both technical work and operational execution at the intersection of fast-paced innovation and high expectations for quality and safety.
Responsibilities:
- Establish and implement practices across the company to ensure that hardware is designed, built, and operated with the highest level of engineering rigor.
- Understand and implement Quality Assurance requirements (NQA-1) to keep Radiant in compliance with industry regulation.
- Evaluate the direct impact that quality procedures have on hardware production; revise procedures as needed to support production while maintaining compliance.
- Create new policies and procedures as necessary to support changing priorities and respond to new challenges.
- Execute an internal audit program to verify compliance and effective quality program implementation.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in engineering and ability to apply fundamental engineering principles.
- Deep familiarity with quality management systems (AS9100, ISO9001, NQA-1, TS16959, etc.)
- 2+ years of full-time experience with engineering problem solving in hardware design, testing, systems engineering, build reliability or quality assurance.
- The ability to challenge assumptions, always asking why and getting to the root of the matter; conversely, able to accept challenges and engage with different viewpoints.
- Hands-on experience with requirement derivation, negotiation and verification; or experience with the product design process especially as it relates to defining systems, interfaces and specifications.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience in a Mission Assurance, Quality Assurance, Build Reliability, or Systems Engineering role.
- Full product life cycle experience with hardware that has seen production.
- Interpersonal skills to interact with both internal and external groups to overcome associated constraints.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills with proven ability to rapidly resolve interdisciplinary issues.
