KEYWORDS: coastal resilience, data management, ecosystem restoration, GIS, planning
PURPOSE
This GIS Assistant is an AmeriCorps position. In early 2024, a series of severe winter storms caused widespread damage to Acadia National Park’s coastal ecosystems, cultural resources, and infrastructure. The park is now undertaking one of the most ambitious and collaborative resource management efforts in its history—focused on restoring damaged areas, enhancing resilience, and rethinking infrastructure placement in the face of future extreme weather events.
This position directly supports that effort by providing essential GIS expertise to inform planning, environmental compliance, and restoration strategies. The participant’s projects will ensure that spatial data are accurate, accessible, and effectively used to guide decision-making. By contributing to the development of geospatial tools, maps, and data workflows, the participant will help protect sensitive habitats, cultural sites, and visitor infrastructure.
This position addresses a high-priority natural resource management challenge, fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, and offers the participant a meaningful opportunity to apply and expand their geospatial skills in service of public lands.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
This position is designed to provide meaningful, full-time contributions that build technical and professional skills in geospatial analysis, data management, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The GIS Assistant participant will play a critical role in Acadia National Park’s response to severe coastal storm damage by supporting planning, environmental compliance, and ecosystem restoration efforts.
The participant will:
(1) Manage GIS data to ensure access, accuracy, and proper documentation (metadata), including reviewing new data for completeness, format compatibility, and sensitivity.
(2) Produce cartographic products and spatial analyses to support interdisciplinary park projects, including planning and restoration. This includes collaborating with staff to understand project needs and recommending appropriate geospatial solutions.
(3) Provide technical GIS/GNSS support to park staff, including managing GNSS equipment, assisting with field data collection workflows, and staying current with NPS geospatial policies and tools.
(4) Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including natural and cultural resource managers, planners, and restoration specialists to ensure geospatial data informs decision-making.
The participant will serve primarily at Park Headquarters in Bar Harbor, with occasional field excursions to support data collection and project implementation.
DELIVERABLES
The participant will produce a suite of geospatial products and documentation that directly support storm recovery and resource management efforts. These include:
(1) Geospatial datasets: Curated and documented GIS layers with associated metadata.
(2) Cartographic products: Maps (digital and print) for planning, compliance, and restoration projects.
(3) Web-based tools: Web maps or apps (e.g., ArcGIS Online) to support internal and external communication.
(4) Standardized SOPs: Written technical guides and established workflows for GNSS data collection using tools like Field Maps or Survey123.
(5) Final project documentation: A portfolio of completed projects including maps, data, workflows, and a summary report.
Deliverables will be reviewed and finalized in collaboration with park staff and shared with relevant stakeholders.
