Your Job
This is a seasonal position concluding on June 7, 2026. Security Officer maintains a safe and secure environment for zoo guests, staff, and animals by patrolling and monitoring Tulsa Zoo grounds, striving to give the highest level of care and guest service in every interaction.
Your Essential Responsibilities

- Perform security patrols of designated areas on foot or in vehicle.
- Act as first responder in the case of zoo accidents, incidents, and emergencies, performing basic first aid.
- Watch for irregular or unusual conditions that may create security concerns or safety hazards.
- Call emergency fire or medical services when necessary, coordinating the location of their entrance on zoo grounds.
- Warn violators of rule infractions, including but not limited to smoking, carrying forbidden articles, and accessing unauthorized areas.
- Permit authorized persons to enter property and monitor entrances and exits.
- Investigate and prepare reports on accidents, incidents, and suspicious activities.
- Assist customers, employees, and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
- Operate vehicles and equipment to provide security for zoo.
- Manage dangerous situations to assure the safety and protection of zoo property and personnel, occasionally including physical confrontation when necessary.
- Effectively communicate and demonstrate interpersonal skills with all levels of employees in a clear and professional manner.
- Demonstrate and adhere to TZMI’s workplace values.
- Know and follow zoo policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and assigned training sessions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no direct reports.
What We Expect
Required Qualifications, Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); at least two years of security, military or law enforcement experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Must be 18 years or older, possess a valid driver’s license, and be insurable on TZMI’s insurance carrier
- Must be able to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; communicate effectively before groups of customers, employees of TZMI, and the general public
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to use Office 365 and popular internet browsers
