Senior Environmental Consultant – Christchurch
Babbage is a multi-disciplinary consultancy with a strong reputation for delivering integrated solutions across engineering, environmental science, planning, and project management. We’re looking for a proactive and highly experienced Principal Environmental Consultant to grow our contaminated land group in Christchurch, mentor our team, and help develop environmental consulting opportunities across New Zealand.
In this role, you’ll be responsible for leading contaminated land and environmental projects, supporting technical excellence, and ensuring high-quality reporting for our clients. You’ll help shape the future of our environmental services while fostering collaboration across disciplines.
This role reports directly to our Contamination Investigation and Management (CIM) Team Leader in Auckland.
You will also be responsible for:
Project Leadership & Technical Delivery
- Leading contaminated land projects from planning to completion.
- Conducting industrial and commercial site assessments, including hazardous substances evaluations.
- Analysing and interpreting technical data, preparing high-quality client reports.
- Ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to professional standards.
- Collaborating with other disciplines to achieve the best outcomes for clients.
Business Development & Mentorship
- Growing and maintaining environmental consulting opportunities across New Zealand.
- Mentoring and supporting team members to build capability and maintain high-quality delivery.
Health, Safety & Quality
- Driving a positive Health & Safety culture within the team.
- Ensuring QA/QC processes are applied across all projects.
What you’ll bring:
- 10+ years’ experience in environmental science or engineering.
- Bachelor’s or higher in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field; Master’s preferred.
- Recognised leader with a track record of attracting and securing business.
- Strong knowledge of the Resource Management Act; experience presenting expert evidence preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, including technical report writing.
- Client-focused, collaborative, and solutions-oriented.
