SUMMARY
The Storm Water Services Surface Water Quality and Environmental Permitting Program is seeking a Summer 2026 college intern. This position will have an opportunity to assist scientists, engineers, and other environmental professionals with all aspects of surface water quality management, improvement, and permitting.
Salary Offering: $20.00/hr.
Please note that this internship position is not eligible for employee benefits.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform data review and analysis
- Perform and review hydrologic and hydraulic calculations
- Conduct various research including stormwater infrastructure design best practices and various illicit discharge/pollution issues
- Assist with storm drain infrastructure and stream field work
- Assist with public education and outreach efforts
- Review stormwater project plans and construction photos to evaluate records and regulatory compliance
- Assist with Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis using ArcMap - review data, assign attributes to features, and perform spatial analysis and database management
- Assist in research prioritization and literature review
- Assist with documentation review and organization
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to learn and apply City of Charlotte Land Development Standards, NCDOT Standards and Specifications, Charlotte-Mecklenburg SCM Design Manual and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Design Manual
- Ability to learn and interpret stormwater project plans and construction photos to evaluate and document pre and post construction conditions.
- Ability to use and understand GIS processes within ArcMap software
- Ability to assign attributes to features and perform spatial analysis and database management
- Ability to work autonomously and be self-motivated to move projects forward
- Understand efficient time management skills and apply them to short-term project activities and tasks
- Good organizational skills that can be applied to science/engineering activities associated with project design
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Interest in developing and creating technical reports
- Interest in applying engineering design techniques for stormwater modeling and design tasks
- Ability to learn and understand hydraulic and hydrologic software
- Ability to work cooperatively with City employees and the public
- Must be comfortable traversing difficult terrain, structures, barriers, and various urban/rural conditions; encountering a variety of animals, insects, vegetation and weather; interacting with the public; and experiencing unforeseen conditions/situations in accessing and entering drainage features within the right-of-way, public and private property
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiar with basic engineering mathematics and geometry skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled as undergraduate college student with course study in civil engineering/environmental science/civil engineering technology, geography or related field
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
