Job Description and Duties
Under the general direction of the Chief, Office of Project Management (a Supervising Transportation Engineer), the incumbent is responsible for ensuring the delivery of all assigned projects within scope, cost, schedule, and resources. Incumbent is responsible for managing and facilitating the development and engineering administration of the project from inception through completion of the construction contract. These projects include those funded wholly or partially by local agency funds, developer funds, Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), State Highway Operational and Protection Program (SHOPP), storm damage, seismic projects, minors, and other Capital Outlay funded and Oversight projects. Incumbent will represent the Department at public hearings and other forums.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
Will work in a climate‑controlled office, under artificial lighting. May also be expected to work outside the office and may be exposed to various elements of weather, such as sun, wind, fog and rain. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in‑person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required.
Special Requirements
- This position(s) requires(s) a valid Professional …License issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers for appointment.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating state owned or leased vehicles.
- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required.

The SOQ must specifically address the questions, be numbered in the same order as listed, 2 pages maximum and in 12‑point font. A resume will not be accepted in lieu of the SOQ. Failure to include and complete the SOQ may result in disqualification for interview.
