The Opportunity
We are seeking a Conservation Research Specialist to conduct high quality research that supports wildlife conservation via APC’s conservation strategy. Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Generating data to support conservation and research goals, grant proposal writing and grant reporting, data collection in the zoo, park, lab, and in the field, assisting in the coordination and implementation of research in the zoo by external scientists, communication of research and conservation progress and results, implementation of conservation programs where directed, and related duties as required.
Reporting to the Conservation Programs Manager, the Conservation Research Specialist will work with the team to secure funding, lead conservation action, conduct research, and communicate progress and results to a wide variety of stakeholders.
This position will be primarily focused on projects within APC’s conservation strategy themes of Protecting Urban Biodiversity and Preventing Species Extinction, including, but not limited to, grassland butterfly conservation, bird-window collision prevention, and biodiversity monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Collect data in accordance with academic community standards, scientific rigor, and zoo policies and procedures.
- Conduct conservation fieldwork in the park and in remote field locations.
- Assist student research projects as needed.
- Conduct data analysis and present results in a variety of formats when required.
- Assist in obtaining grants to support conservation and research projects, including researching grant funding opportunities, preparing funding proposals, and assisting in reporting outcomes.
- Develop and deliver talks and presentations on APC research programs as required.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Required Education, Training, and Experience
- Minimum MSc in biological science or related field with the completion of a thesis at this level or higher.
- Must possess a valid Manitoba Driver’s License (or equivalent).
- Must be able to obtain a Firearms Possession and Acquisition License.
- Experience in experimental design and scientific research methodologies.
- Experience conducting biological fieldwork to advance conservation goals.
- Experience analysing data and communicating research results.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft office suite and data analysis software.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
