We are looking for a Site Manager with at least three years of experience overseeing all major construction disciplines for solar projects. You will need to take a hands-on approach and can foresee any site obstacles and risks and, consequently, draw up smart contingency plans to mitigate these risks.
With in-depth knowledge of the PV industry, you must ensure all technical requirements defined in the contract are properly incorporated in the site deliverables and that internal and external engineering activities with various sub-contractors are successfully implemented. You must manage and facilitate communication across the site functions, including our technical team, subcontractors, and other stakeholders, to meet project objectives and needs.
Position of the job in the organisation:
The successful candidate will report directly to the Construction Execution Manager.
Principal responsibilities:
- Manage and coordinate site construction activities.
- Manage and coordinate delivery of stock items for construction.
- Oversee construction quality control requirements.
- Assist Project Managers with contractor and client relationship management.
- Assist the Project Manager with construction documentation control and quality assurance.
- Analyse and execute tasks per engineering drawings and communicate any site deviances with the technical team.
- Coordinate Site Progress Reviews and ensure the project construction activities are on track and the status thereof is communicated regularly to the Project Manager.
- Enforce HSE, DSTI and safety compliance with appointed sub-contractors.
- Any other job duties associated with this role.
Experience & Skills
- Proven experience as a Site Manager or Site Supervisor in the solar industry.
- Proven Experience as an electrician. Diploma in relevant vocational training or completed apprenticeship as an electrician.
- Ability to use project-related computer software; MS Projects or Smartsheets is preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and legal regulations and guidelines.
- Able to effectively multitask, prioritise and meet strict deadlines.
- Resourceful and comfortable working in a high pace and changing environment.
- Comfortable with working at heights.
- Computer literacy (MS Office).
- Valid driver's license and willing to travel
Advantageous Skills Include:
- Major construction engineering disciplines, i.e., Civil, Mechanical and Electrical.
- SANS 10142 and NRS 097-2 standards specifically reference embedded generation.
- Surge and Lightning protection and grounding systems.
- Networking equipment and industrial communication protocols like Modbus, RS485, Ethernet, etc.
- First Aid.
Work conditions:
- Working over weekends or overtime may be needed when construction deadlines need to be met.
- High paced and changing environment.
By Month 3:
- I will be familiar with the project management software, financial processes, and construction documentation control.
- I will have participated in monthly 1:1s and quarterly reviews, and I will have a clear understanding of my role's expectations according to the project's milestones.
- I will have successfully coordinated the delivery of stock items and ensured that initial site construction activities are on schedule.
By Month 6:
- I have mastered the core project processes, including overseeing quality control, coordinating site progress reviews, and ensuring that contractor and client relationships are managed effectively.
- I am able to identify and address any site deviations from engineering drawings and communicate these to the technical team.
- I will have ensured compliance with HSE, DSTI, and safety regulations, holding sub-contractors accountable for adherence.
By Month 12:
- I am confidently managing multiple construction projects simultaneously, coordinating with Project Managers, and ensuring all construction activities are on track.
- I can enforce strict quality control standards, provide regular updates to Project Managers, and successfully manage site-related risks.
- I can independently lead site progress reviews, proactively address any project delays, and deliver consistent performance aligned with the expectations set by the Project Manager.
