UNH is seeking a motivated, self-directed Hazardous Waste Manager to support all University of New Hampshire programs and activities. This position provides hazardous waste management support for a wide variety of activities at UNH including teaching operations, cutting-edge research, and other university operations including dining, athletics, farms, and facilities operations.
The position oversees the University’s hazardous waste management program, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. Responsibilities include managing the full life cycle of hazardous waste—from identification and collection through transportation and disposal—maintaining waste accumulation areas, supervising vendor contracts, and supporting regulatory reporting and inspections.
The role also develops and implements waste management policies and training programs, provides technical guidance to campus researchers and staff, and coordinates emergency response for hazardous materials incidents. This position plays a key role in promoting safe practices, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance across the university community.
Duties/Responsibilities
Hazardous Waste and Container Management - (35%)
The position oversees the full life cycle of hazardous waste generated by the university, including identification, collection, processing, accumulation, transportation, and disposal.
Responsibilities include maintaining the Central Hazardous Waste Accumulation Area, supervising regulated waste shipments, and determining the regulatory status of waste streams.
The role also involves inspecting and monitoring hazardous waste accumulation areas across campus to ensure compliance and safe practices.
Compliance, Recordkeeping, and Reporting – (25%)
This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations through meticulous recordkeeping and reporting.
Duties include preparing and maintaining training records, shipping papers, waste profiles, and regulatory notifications, as well as researching waste disposal technologies and regulatory changes.
The position advises management on compliance issues, represents the university in interactions with regulatory agencies, and prepares environmental health and safety reports to keep leadership informed of program activities and obligations.
Policy Development and Program Oversight – (15%)
The position develops, reviews, and updates university hazardous materials management policies and plans, including contingency, minimization, and spill response plans.
It also evaluates and updates waste management elements of environmental health and safety programs to ensure alignment with regulations and strategic priorities.
Collaboration with OEHS staff and researchers is essential to implement best management practices and support the safe and compliant conduct of research and operations.
Training, Consultation, and Outreach – (10%)
Providing technical consultation and training is a key aspect of the role.
The position develops and delivers waste management training programs and educational materials for faculty, staff, and students, ensuring that all stakeholders understand and comply with hazardous waste regulations.
Through outreach and expert guidance, the role promotes safe handling, storage, and disposal practices across the university community.
Contracts, Budget, and Staff Supervision – (10%)
The position develops and manages contracts with regulated waste vendors, coordinates with the Purchasing Department, and ensures cost-effective and timely disposal of waste.
It also oversees program budgeting and resource allocation.
As a supervisor, the role is responsible for hiring, training, and evaluating staff, assigning responsibilities, and monitoring work activities to ensure efficient and compliant program operations.
Incident and Emergency Response – (5%)
The role manages the university’s response to hazardous material incidents, directing internal and external resources to mitigate risks effectively and safely.
Responsibilities include determining reportable releases, notifying regulatory agencies, and coordinating with emergency responders.
The position also serves as a technical advisor to the Town of Durham Fire Department Incident Commander during hazardous materials emergencies.
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
Master's degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related discipline and seven years of professional experience in environmental health and safety or related field, including two years as supervisor; or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related discipline and nine years of experience, including four as manager.
Required Licenses & Certifications:
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Administrative and supervisory skills.
Professional certification EHS technical discipline, or ability to obtain such certification.
Comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, nationally recognized codes and guidelines as related to specialized environmental health and safety functions, as required by the position.
Computer skills, including applicable software applications, spreadsheets, and database management.
Must be able to wear and use appropriate protective equipment as necessary.
Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of the program as described by the department.
Ability to respond promptly in-person to UNH location requiring environmental health and safety services.

Compensation Pay Range:
$72,980.00 - $130,670.00
