Join us as an Environmental Resources Intern and tackle some seriously cool projects this summer!
You'll be out in the field inspecting construction sites, managing native and invasive vegetation, and collecting water samples. You'll also get to put your tech skills to use with GPS, FieldMaps and other tracking software. Plus, you'll play a key role in growing our outreach programs – because every person educated can help! This position has a tentative start date between April and June, 2026 and will be completed after 500 hours worked, or until a return to school. This position offers a flexible work schedule.
First review of applicants will begin on January 12, 2026. Position is open until filled.
Major Areas of Accountability
- Assist in performing field inspections of active construction sites, municipal storm water basins and outfalls.
- Provide support for vegetation assessments in outlots and parklands as needed.
- Conduct vegetation management in city outlots and parklands as needed in many project areas across the city using equipment such as weed whips, loppers, etc.
- Assist in conducting lake sampling bi-weekly for Community-Assisted Monitoring Program (CAMP) and collect piezometer ground water level readings at various locations.
- Assist in conducting field surveys, data collection, and inventory of municipal storm water basins and outfalls, and water quality data relating to lakes and streams.
- Utilize ArcPro, FieldMaps, EDDMapS, Cartegraph, and GIS for work tasks, data entry, and mapping needs.
- Assist with public education and engagement activities related to stormwater management, invasive species as well as waste reduction initiatives and sustainability.
- Support environmental education initiatives and activities for youth and adults in parks department nature-based programming.
- Miscellaneous duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and various terrains.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and complete work accurately on a timely basis.
- Ability to use weed whips, loppers, and daubing of chemicals low to the ground.
- Ability to lift 30 – 50 lbs.
- Flexible up to 40 hours per week.
Qualifications
- At least a High School graduate enrolled in accredited college, university program for environmental science/natural resource related major or has at least two years related work experience.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Capable plant identification skills of native plants and invasive species.
- Experience in manning a canoe.
