Job Description
The Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control is looking for an
Environmental Scientist IV to work in the Low Level Radioactive Waste (LLRW) Section.
This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series. Principal DutiesAs an Environmental Scientist you will:
- Assist the low level radioactive waste program manager in prioritizing projects to include tracking progress and results for a team of scientists and engineers.
- Actively solve problems, identify and implement continuous improvement projects in a professional, responsive, fair manner supported by science and the law.
- Effectively communicate and professionally engage with a variety of stakeholders, including but not limited to colleagues in the Low Level Radioactive Waste program, division leadership, State and Federal Government and the public.
- Evaluate requests to license and regulate the Low Level Radioactive Waste facility in the State of Utah to protect human health, safety and the environment in accordance with the applicable laws, including consideration of emerging regulatory and industry needs.
Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate for this role is someone with:
- The ability to read, interpret, and apply federal and state environmental policies, laws, rules, and regulations that are technical in nature, and use logic and research to draw conclusions and propose quality solutions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate scientific and technical information both orally and in writing to a broad range of audiences.
- Experience managing multiple technical projects, including planning and prioritizing work and performing in a productive and professional manner for timely completion.
- Experience developing and implementing continuous improvement projects.
- Knowledge of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Low Level Radioactive Waste regulations.
PreferencesPreference may be given to those with a:- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, Chemistry, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a closely related field is preferred.
Job SeriesThe selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist I with a salary range of $25.27- $37.95 per hour, an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $29.73 - $44.66 per hour, an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $34.98 - $52.56 per hour, or an Environmental Scientist IV with a salary range of $39.02 - $58.61.Work Location
This position may be eligible for an in-office, remote or hybrid/flexible work schedule after several days of in-office training during your first weeks of employment. Our office is located 195 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, Utah. A position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason. Note: Under Administrative Rule R13-4 all work must be performed within the State of Utah.

- Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
- Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
