The Environmental & Sustainability Supervisor is responsible for leading site-level environmental compliance programs and advancing Thrive Freeze Dry’s corporate ESG and sustainability initiatives. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local requirements while driving improvements in waste reduction, water conservation, utility tracking, recycling, and sustainability reporting.
Although this position is part of the EHS team and will support certain safety initiatives, its primary focus is Environmental Compliance, Sustainability, and ESG performance.
The Supervisor works collaboratively with Operations, Engineering, Sanitation, Maintenance, the Safety Supervisor, and the Director of Risk Management to implement environmental programs, maintain documentation, and support regulatory readiness.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Environmental Compliance
• Maintain and manage site environmental programs including hazardous and non-hazardous waste, stormwater, wastewater, air permitting, and chemical storage.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Oversee environmental discharge sampling, testing, monitoring, and reporting.
• Maintain environmental permits, required documentation, and regulatory files.
• Conduct routine environmental inspections and corrective-action follow-ups.
• Manage hazardous waste vendors, waste manifesting, profiling, and disposal documentation.
• Support environmental components of the ammonia refrigeration (RMP/PSM) program.
• Prepare for and support environmental audits, inspections, and agency interactions.
• Provide routine support for designated safety initiatives as part of the EHS team.
Sustainability Programs & ESG Support
• Track, analyze, and report sustainability metrics such as energy usage, water consumption, waste generation, recycling rates, and diversion performance.
• Support corporate ESG reporting requirements, including compliance with SB-261.
• Identify and assist in implementing resource-efficiency and waste-reduction projects.
• Lead site recycling and waste-minimization initiatives.
• Partner with operations and sanitation teams to reduce waste and improve water efficiency.
• Support plant and corporate development of annual sustainability goals and metrics.
Training & Engagement
• Deliver environmental, sustainability, and waste-management training to employees.
• Promote employee engagement in recycling, conservation, and sustainability efforts.
• Support spill-response readiness and maintain environmental emergency preparedness.
Data, Systems & Reporting
• Maintain accurate EHS, ESG, and environmental records, logs, documents, and databases.
• Use spreadsheets and digital systems to track and trend environmental and sustainability metrics.
• Support monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting to corporate ESG and Risk Management.
• Conduct root-cause analysis and track corrective actions for environmental issues.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Partner with Engineering and Maintenance to evaluate environmental impacts of new equipment, projects, and processes.
• Work closely with the Director of Risk Management on environmental and sustainability strategy.
• Collaborate with Operations, Sanitation, and Quality to integrate environmental requirements into daily operations.
• Work closely and regularly with the Safety Supervisor to support designated safety responsibilities within the EHS team.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
• Bachelor's or Associate degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or related field preferred.
• 2 years minimum of experience in environmental compliance or sustainability.
• Experience with environmental permits, waste management, and regulatory reporting.
• ESG, Sustainability experience, strongly preferred.
Skills & Competencies
• Knowledge of EPA, RCRA, SPCC, stormwater, wastewater, and air regulations.
• Strong analytical and data interpretation skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and SharePoint.
• Strong communication, documentation, and training abilities.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities.
