FOOD AND LODGING DIVISION: Performs professional environmental health work in the promotion of public health through education, surveillance, consultation, inspection, and enforcement of state, local, and federal environmental health laws and regulations. Functions as a specialist with the Food and Lodging Division of the Environmental Health Office. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Environmental Health Supervisor I.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
• Working knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and procedures, as well as a complete understanding of the concepts of public health law
• Practical knowledge of microbiology, chemistry, food science, epidemiology, and basic engineering technology as applied to environmental health practices
• General knowledge of community resources
• Working knowledge of the responsibilities of other agencies involved in environmental health work
• Working knowledge of the interrelationship between socio-economic factors and environmental health concerns
Education and Experience Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree or postgraduate degree from a program that is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC) OR
• Bachelor’s Degree or postgraduate degree from an appropriately accredited institution in Public Health and one (1) year of experience in the field of environmental health practice OR
• Bachelor’s Degree or postgraduate degree from an appropriately accredited institution with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in the physical, biological, natural, life, or health sciences and one (1) year of experience in the field of environmental health practice
AND
• Must be eligible to meet the requirements for registration or license as an Environmental Health Specialist as outlined in Article 4, Chapter 90A of the NC General Statutes
*** Applications for Environmental Health Specialist Trainee will be considered if no qualified Environmental Health Specialist applicants are available. Starting salary for an Environmental Health Specialist Trainee is $63,057.
License, Certification, and Other Special Requirements
• Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
• Must be eligible to meet the requirements for registration or license as an Environmental Health Specialist as outlined in Article 4, Chapter 90A of the NC General Statutes
