JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBLITES
Protects public’s health by conducting inspections, site visits and plan reviews to enforce relevant laws, codes, rules and regulations. Provides guidance and education to business owners, local partners and the general public. Conducts investigations in response to complaints and environmental health concerns. Work is performed under supervision and direction of the Health Officer, but latitude is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative, as majority of work is performed in the field. Supports public health emergency response efforts as required. This position is distinguished from the EHS I position with additional experience required, the addition of NEHA’s REHS credential, a greater role in leadership and training, and completes more complex investigations. This position is a grade 14 and salary is dependent on experience.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

College degree (4 years) in Microbiology, Biology, or equivalent
Five (5) to eight (8) years relevant job experience in environmental health, and microbiology, with supervisory, management and education instruction experience
National Environmental Health Association’s Registered Environmental Health Specialist credential.
ServSafe Manager Certification.
Certified Pool Operator’s certification.
FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, 800.
National Environmental Health Association’s Certified Professional-Food Safety (CP-FS) credential.
Knowledge of epidemiology control, communicable diseases and insect and vector control practices.
Ability to work without direct supervision and maintain accountability.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to assess and communicate risk to general public in relationship to environmental health concerns.
Ability to accurately document inspection findings and recommendations.
Ability to determine appropriate levels of hazards, protect personal safety, and subsequent enforcement actions including condemnation of housing and reporting abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults, children and pets.
Delivers culturally-appropriate information to help individuals and groups understand local public health policies, regulations and codes.
Ability to interact effectively and professionally with persons of all ages, cultures, socioeconomic, educational, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, lifestyles and physical abilities.
Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
