As a Marine/ Mechanical / Environmental Engineer, you will be actively engaged in driving industry-leading research and development associated with machinery and systems for marine and offshore applications.
What You Will Do:
- Lead research and assess the maturity of new technologies in the marine industry related to carbon capture, CO2 transportation, non-carbon/ low carbon-based fuels, renewable energies including different machinery and systems etc.).
- Establish guidance and classification requirements for the marine and offshore industry on the application of new technology.
- Support ABS technical community on queries regarding different onboard mechanical equipment and systems.
- Maintain and demonstrate thought leadership through technical publications and presentations.
- Participate in industry societies to develop and enhance technical capabilities.
- Remains knowledgeable of new scientific methods and developments affecting the technical scope of assigned responsibilities and recommends changes in engineering processes and programs as warranted by such developments.
- Devises new approaches to problems encountered and recommends changes in methods, procedures, or design where necessary.
- Monitors the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of action of all assigned projects.
- Maintains liaison with other engineering specialists, internally and externally.
- Assist Principal Engineer and/or immediate superior in developing qualification statements, proposals, bids, and other presentation materials.
- Promotes ABS Quality System within an assigned group of engineers.
What You Will Need:
Education and Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years relevant engineering experience in the energy industry, shipyard, design/consulting company, shipping/oil company, university, or classification society.
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical/ marine/ environmental engineering or other related discipline; M.S. is preferred.
- Having experience or knowledge with AI as it relates to mechanical/maritime concepts is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of onboard machinery and systems is a plus, including emerging technologies such as carbon capture (both pre- and post-combustion), CO2 transportation, ammonia crackers, methane reformers, methane slip, renewable energies, electrolyzers, and energy-saving devices. Also, basic understanding of marine piping systems (e.g., fresh water, sea water, lubrication oil, fuel oil, compressed air, hydraulic system, cryogenics piping, etc.
- Knowledge of general mechanical systems.
- General knowledge of environmental engineering.
- Awareness of alternative marine fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, synthetic fuel, and biofue,l etc.
- Awareness of fuel cell technology and application.
- Awareness of emerging technologies and trends in the marine industry, including emerging engines, fuels, power generation, and energy savings.
- Strong communicator with excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent command of the English language.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with others.
- Ability to learn the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System.
Reporting Relationships:
This position reports to a Senior or Manager level position or above.
