We’re seeking a motivated Environmental Engineer to support our expanding Environmental group within the Development Services Division.
Our multidisciplinary team—environmental, planning, landscape architecture, and economic development—works together from early project concepts through investigation, design, and construction. We’re looking for someone who wants to build their career alongside experienced project managers and technical leads. You’ll support a wide range of environmental engineering tasks including assessment, site investigation, remediation, stormwater and solid waste engineering, and regulatory compliance. Much of our work centers on Brownfield redevelopment in Wisconsin and across the country. Ayres has helped remediate and redevelop hundreds of Brownfield sites nationwide, earning numerous state and national awards.

On any given day, you may:
- Assist with the design of civil and environmental engineering systems.
- Collect soil and groundwater samples to support investigation and remediation projects.
- Prepare field reports, maps, and site documentation.
- Interpret environmental data and perform engineering calculations.
- Conduct Phase I and II ESAs and impact assessments following ASTM standards.
- Support design, permitting, contracting, construction administration, and construction observation for solid waste and other environmental engineering projects (e.g., soil density testing, geomembrane installation oversight, well installation observation).
- Prepare SPCC plans, petroleum storage tank and containment designs, mining reclamation plans, stormwater permits, SWPPPs, and other engineering plans related to redevelopment and Brownfield projects.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Geology, Geological/Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
- Passed the FE exam or ability to pass within one year.
- Interest in pursuing Professional Engineer licensure.
- Minimum one year of relevant environmental engineering experience (investigation, soil/groundwater sampling, or technical reporting).
- Experience in any of the following: Phase I/II ESAs, hydrogeologic sampling and evaluation, solid waste or stormwater permitting, SPCC compliance, NEPA/WEPA, or Wisconsin NR 700-series investigations.
- Strong technical writing, communication, organization, and data management skills.
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to travel in and out of state, including overnight stays.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs., work on uneven terrain, and perform outdoor fieldwork up to 25% of the time.
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- 2–4 years of environmental or geological consulting experience.
- Experience with Civil3D (CAD).
- Familiarity with environmental assessment, investigation, remediation, Brownfield redevelopment, UST/AST design and regulations, and stormwater permitting/inspections.
- Knowledge of solid waste engineering, landfill siting, permitting, construction, operations, and post-closure maintenance.
- Working knowledge of Wisconsin and federal environmental regulations (NR 100–700 series, NEPA/WEPA, RCRA, CERCLA, SPCC, etc.).
