Behavioral Research Internship (Level 2) - Spring 2026
Location: Central Park Zoo
Department: Animal
Duration & Schedule: Spring 2026 season (February - early May) Approx 10-14 weeks; 8-16 hours per week
Stipend: $320-$900 (depending on duration and schedule) to be paid as one lump sum upon the completion of the position, less applicable taxes

Internship Summary:
This Level 2 internship offers a deeper, more analytical exploration of animal behavior studies within a zoo environment. Building on foundational skills from the Level 1 internship, interns will expand their proficiency in observational data collection and begin to take ownership of data interpretation and reporting. Interns will gain advanced training in behavioral research methodology and use of standardized tools and software to support evidence-based decision-making in animal care and welfare.
Learning Outcomes:
Interns will strengthen data collection skills using various behavioral observation methods tailored to zoo-housed species.
Interns will receive advanced training in data management and behavioral data analysis using specialized software.
Interns will learn to assess data quality and apply statistical methods to detect trends, patterns, and anomalies.
Interns will learn to translate research findings into actionable insights that inform animal care, enrichment, and exhibit design.
Interns will prepare and deliver a final professional presentation or written report that includes data visualizations and evidence-based recommendations.
Internal Qualification Requirements
Must be 18 years of age or older
Must be a current student enrolled in a degree-granting program
Ability to operate well in a busy and fast paced environment
Must be eligible to work in the United States
