The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As a Maintenance Technician, you are responsible for manual labor tasks in a wide variety of job assignments such as general maintenance, repairs, and preventative upkeep of zoo facilities, buildings, and grounds, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical systems. Typically, you will be under the direct supervision of a Craftsperson or Manager. Still, many routine and repetitive tasks may be completed without difficulty and under general supervision.
As a Maintenance Technician, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Performing general maintenance, repairs, and preventative upkeep of zoo facilities, buildings, and grounds, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical systems.
- Conducting routine inspections to identify and resolve maintenance issues in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Performing basic carpentry, painting, and patching to maintain the appearance and functionality of public and staff areas.
- Assisting with the installation, repair, and replacement of fixtures, equipment, and structural components.
- Supporting zoo operations by responding promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies.
- Ensuring all work complies with applicable safety regulations, building codes, and zoo policies.
- Maintaining and operating tools, vehicles, and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Working collaboratively with other departments, including Animal Care, Guest Experience, and Horticulture, to complete maintenance projects and operational needs.
- Assisting in the setup and breakdown of zoo events, exhibits, and seasonal displays as needed.
- Performing minor electrical work such as replacing light fixtures, outlets, and switches under supervision of licensed staff (as applicable).
- Supporting preventive maintenance schedules and documenting all completed work accurately.
- Monitoring and maintaining inventory of maintenance supplies and notifying leadership when restocking is needed.
- Operating heavy equipment, power tools, and vehicles safely in accordance with training and safety procedures.
- Identifying and reporting safety hazards, maintenance needs, or potential risks throughout the zoo grounds.
- Upholds all company policies as outlined in the Zoo Standard Operating Procedures, SA Zoo Team Member Handbook, and Code of Business Conduct.
- Consistently exhibit an attitude of service inside and outside of the zoo, showing hospitality to all.

Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- Have the ability to understand, foresee, and apply necessary safety precautions applicable to the Zoo environment.
- Knowledge of the use of hand & power tools and equipment is required.
- Responsible for completing all online training courses by assigned deadlines.
- Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
- This position requires a valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License or a valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a Class "C" Texas Driver's License within 45 days of becoming employed.
- Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
- Must be able to work in varying climate and weather conditions (rain, snow, hot, or cold).
- We enjoy year-round operation for all staff, must be available day, nights, weekends, and occasional special after-hour assignments.
