Job Description and Duties
Under the direction of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the Party Chief administers professional land survey tasks in the Field Branch of the Land Surveys Division. The incumbent plans and organizes the work of a land surveys field crew; coordinates field surveying activities with other Caltrans functional units, contractors and the public. Performs a wide variety of difficult and complex professional surveying work while exercising independent professional judgment in responsible charge of assignments.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the TRANSPORTATION SURVEYOR PARTY CHIEF (CALTRANS) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid California Land Surveyors' License. (A Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors).
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.

- Demonstrate your experience as a lead worker in land surveys, showcasing your ability to hire, supervise, train, discipline, and mentor staff within both field and office environments, and your experience working with public and state agencies, contractors, and the public.
- Provide your field experience performing various types of surveys, including horizontal and vertical control, boundary, Digital Terrain Model (DTM) topographic, monitoring, aerial photogrammetric, and construction surveys.
- Illustrate your experience in balancing multiple priorities, meeting strict deadlines, organizing tools and equipment, maintaining records, tracking schedules, and managing staff.
- Demonstrate your understanding of land surveying techniques for both field and office, along with the necessary mathematical principles and concepts.
- Provide your experience working with software, including Civil3D, MicroStation, TopoDOT, Trimble Business Center, and Trimble Access, Microsoft Office Suite, and any Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Describe your experience working with various field surveying systems such as Terrestrial, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Mobile Terrestrial Laser Scanning Systems (MTLS), and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).
- Demonstrate your office experience, particularly in Digital Terrain Model processing, point cloud registration and extraction, record map preparation, boundary determination, deed writing, record research, and construction plan interpretation.
