Job Description and Duties
Under the general direction of the Branch Chief, Maintenance Design, Office of Maintenance Engineering, the incumbent is responsible for performing a wide range of transportation engineering duties. These duties include, but are not limited to, the delivery of Plans, Specifications and Estimate (PS&E) packages for State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP), Minor Program, and Major Maintenance (HM) projects such as Traffic Safety, Transportation Management System (TMS), Pavement, Bridge, and Culvert projects. The incumbent develops and prepares technical documents, including Project Initiation Reports (PIR), Project Reports (PR), and other written reports and correspondence; investigates safety or operational problems; and conducts studies of alternative solutions.
This position also involves ensuring the completeness and accuracy of documents, as well as making changes or revisions as necessary to maintain compliance with design policies and requirements. The incumbent applies computer software applications and knowledge of Caltrans standards, manuals, guidelines, policies, and directives in the execution of these duties. Field trips for roadway inspection and project review are necessary in the development of contract Plans, Specifications and Estimates.
Possession of a valid California drivers license is required. California Professional Engineering license (Civil) is required for Range D.

Working Conditions
Position located at 703 B Street, Marysville, Yuba County.
The majority of the work will be in the office delivering contract documents for Major Maintenance projects. Incumbent may be required to sit for long periods of time using a keyboard and video display terminal. While working in the office setting, the employee will work in a climate‑controlled office under artificial light.
Some field work will be required. While in the field, the employee may be exposed to dirt, dust, loud noises, traffic, uneven surfaces, plants and a variety of sometimes extreme weather conditions and climates that occur in California. While responding to emergency or storm damage events, the employee may be subjected to extended hours and night work.
The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24‑ to 33‑month rotation assignment for all permanent, full‑time Transportation Engineer (Civil) employees that have completed their probationary period. The program provides opportunities for employees and Caltrans to benefit by participating in a standardized process that systematically engages newly hired engineers. Participants will develop well‑rounded project delivery knowledge, skills, and abilities by rotating through diverse project delivery functional units. The Rotation Program includes mandatory core assignments in Design and Construction units, as well as a mandatory elective assignment. Assignments may involve long‑term travel and can be located throughout the state.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy.
