Job Title: Environmental Health Scientist III, II, I

Job Description:
We are seeking an Environmental Health Scientist III to join our team. This is a working-level position that may be underfilled as an Environmental Health Scientist I or II, depending on qualifications.
As an Environmental Health Scientist III, you will specialize in one or two areas of food, meat, produce, or dairy compliance. Your responsibilities will include assisting in the planning, coordination, and implementation of food and dairy compliance programs, as well as reviewing state and federally regulated food and dairy industry facilities. You will provide guidance on the interpretation and enforcement of relevant laws.
This role requires a high degree of independent judgment as you perform inspections and investigations. You will be responsible for ensuring the reconditioning, removal, or destruction of condemned products and preparing cases for legal action when necessary. These activities are crucial for ensuring food safety and public health protection. Additionally, you will maintain liaison with federal and local agencies and deliver presentations to interested parties.

Responsibilities
- Will be working in and around controlled substances, including cannabis production and processing.
- Inspecting facilities, machinery, equipment, systems, etc., to verify safety, maintenance, sanitary conditions, functions, and quality.
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
- Gathers, identifies, and/or stores samples of materials to be tested on site or forwarded to a laboratory for testing.
- Condemns, detains, embargoes, or stops sale of unfit equipment, machinery, structures, or food products.
- Maintains detailed inspection or investigation records, prepares reports, and attends to other related administrative requirements.
- Evaluates cases and determines need for on-going agency involvement.
- Issues or recommends issuance of orders, citations, sanctions, and/or warnings for infractions involving violations of federal and/or state laws, rules and regulations.
- Coordinates and/or acts as a liaison between agency or work unit and other agencies, work units, organizations,suppliers, etc. Receives, researches and responds to incoming questions or complaints; provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution.
- Develops educational materials and speaks to state or community groups.
- Writes or drafts correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
Qualifications
Education and Certifications:
- A current Environmental Health Scientist License, or the ability and qualification to obtain one.
- Must have a Bachelor's or Masters' Degree in another area of study you must have at least 30 semester hours of science credits from any of the areas of study listed above. Technical Knowledge and Expertise: Possess extensive knowledge, experience and training of food safety, processing standards, processing equipment, HACCP, product extraction methodologies.
- Possess extensive knowledge and experience of existing federal, state and local regulations pertaining to food, dairy, and dietary supplements.
- Be aware of principles, theories, and practices of production, processing, storage, and distribution of agricultural goods.
- Be able to learn principles, theories, and practices of agricultural science, food safety and public health protection.
Communication and Presentation Skills: - Delivers presentations or training using acceptable methods and techniques.
- Speak clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally.
- Communicate fluently in English.
- Communicate ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing.
Analytical and Administrative Skills: - Read, interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures.
- Be able to compose and produce reports, documents and related material.
- Be able to enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form.
- Be able to evaluate information against a set of standards.
Interpersonal and Professional Skills: Be able to deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
Supplemental Information
- Adequate visual acuity is required.
- BS Degree, or higher, in a related field of study.
- Have the ability to obtain licensure as a Registered Environmental Health Scientist Have the ability to obtain FDA and NEHA certification.
- Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g..., working around operating machines or hazardous chemicals, etc.
- Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
- Work requires minimal physical exertion.
- May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop,stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time .
