ROLE PURPOSE
|
To provide support and guidance to our project team working on the rail links to the Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station development. This will be on all aspects of environmental management, meeting legal and company standards and helping deliver a culture of continual improvement.You will be supporting site-set up, construction controls and mitigations, sustainability opportunities and engagement throughout the construction.
Specifically, the role holder will:
- Work closely withproject teams to deliver environmental and sustainability commitments, ensuring ongoing compliance with the company and customer requirements, working with clients such as Sizewell C and Network Rail.
- Demonstrate active leadership on site to proactively drive continual improvement to deliver positive outcomes, best practice and positive learning with the Project Team in line with the company Rail Sustainability Plan.
- Provide environmental support, guidance, and compliance monitoring to projects, ensuring development and maintenance of key environmental documentation and records. Ensuring controls and sustainable ways of working are communicated at site level.
- Lead planned environmental inspections and incident investigations as required. Document best practices and lessons learnt, actively sharing successes and learning.
- Proactively support the Project Team to engage local community groups, supply chain andstakeholders via social sustainability activities, ensuring positive contribution to the communities where we work.

ACCOUNTABILITIES
|
The accountabilities and responsibilities of the role holder include to:
- Contribute to the implementation ofour company sustainability plan driving actions, monitoring progress and reporting.
- Manage project environmental and social risks and opportunities, supporting project teams to develop and maintain local environmental management and sustainability plans and risk assessments.
- Actively lead environment and sustainability, engagingproject teamsto encourage and promote sustainable behaviours and innovations,deliver positive outcomes and maintain
project documentation.
- Provide support and adviceon environmental management, compliance and project specific mitigation measures including pollution control and ecology protection.
- Support applications for consent, licences or permits as required and ensure project
environmental compliance responsibilities are maintained.
- Upskill the project team and contractors on environment and sustainability
responsibilities and controls via work package plans, toolbox talks and on-site learning and
development.
- Accurately record and report environment and sustainability data, best practices and
lessons learnt.
- Ensure upload of data monthly to the sustainability portal.
- Support work winning activities as required.
- Monitor and investigate environmental incidents, complaints and close call reporting. Ensure corrective actions are taken forward and support the business to implement controls to prevent repeat occurrence.
- Undertake planned & unplanned inspections, audit and reviews of site activities, including facilitating external audits by clients and certification bodies.Produce formal reports on findings and communicate these to the project team.
- Be involved at the planning stage to support design teams to identify and control risk and
- identify opportunities to reduce carbon, waste and biodiversity net loss.
- Liaise with client, regulatory bodies and subcontractors on matters of environmental management and sustainability.

PERSONAL QUALITIES AND EXPERIENCE
|
The following qualities/experience are essential:
- Strong knowledge of environment management
- Practical experience and sound knowledge of environmental statutory requirements, including environmental legislation, ecology mitigation, environmental licencing and consent applications and regulation.
- Understanding of the benefits of working collaboratively to obtain the best outcome.
- Good interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
- Determination to see tasks through to completion, with excellent planning and organisation skills.
- Interpreting and managing data via databases, consistent record keeping and writing detailed reports.
- Full UK driver’s licence and flexibility to travel.
- Literate in MS Office – Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Professional Membership level of a relevant professional body (IEMA/CIEEM/CIWEM)
The following qualities/experience are desirable:
- Good knowledge and practical experience of developing, implementing and improving EMS’s certified to ISO 14001 accreditation.
- Internal environmental auditor qualification.
- Knowledge of the Construction Industry – specifically understanding of the rail/construction/engineering operating environment.
- Understanding of the Section 61 application/consent process.
- Understanding of socio-economics (social-value / social-performance).
- Experience of taking on new challenges in a systematic and enthusiastic manner.
- Demonstrable experience in the implementation of the waste hierarchy, Circular Economy principles and beneficial re-use.
- Managing legislative issues for clients, including planning permissions and consents.
