Junior Aboriginal Guide at Sydney Zoo
Located in the heart of Western Sydney, Sydney Zoo strives to showcase a broad range of native and exotic animals using technology and advanced exhibit design, with a strong focus on animal welfare, conservation, and educating our visitors about animals and their habitats. Environmental and social awareness play a vital role in our message that highlights the indigenous culture and human influence on the environment.
The Position
This is an outstanding opportunity to be part of an exciting team at Sydney zoo in the role of Junior Aboriginal Guide on a casual biases, utilising your skills in an area that you are genuinely passionate about. This role will commence as soon as possible.
The purpose of our Junior Aboriginal Guide's are to deliver educational programs to Sydney Zoo visitors ensuring high levels of visitor experience & providing a detailed background of Australia’s history and First Nations cultures.
Skills, Knowledge, and Relevant Experience
Essential
- Aboriginality (Note that this is a genuine Aboriginal position as defined by Section 14 of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977).
- Completion of Year 10 (or equivalent studies), or prepared to undertake suitable bridging studies as part of a pre-employment course.
- A keen Interest in presenting Aboriginal cultural information to Sydney Zoo visitor groups and developing presentation skills.
- Confident in public speaking and engaging the community through lively presentations and tours.
- Ability to take instruction from team supervisor, contribute effectively in a team, and be prepared to share the work load with fellow team members.
- Interest to undertake and learn about Aboriginal and Darug culture during on the job training.
- Be willing to learn and perform traditional dances and songs for the purpose of educating school students and visitors.
- Interest in developing and collaborating on new education programs for school groups.
- Interest to undertake tertiary studies in Aboriginal culture and tour guiding.
Desirable
- Valid driver's license
- First aid certificate
