Purpose
The Environmental Superintendent is responsible for leading the priorities and activities for the Environmental Department. The role is accountable for developing departmental objectives and ensuring the team delivers on those for the Porcupine Operations. The role includes leading the budgeting process and is accountable for the deliverables of this plan for the department. The role is responsible for completing environmental related studies and projects as well as developing and implementing environmental procedures and programs as per technical knowledge of environmental regulatory and other requirements. The person is responsible for leading the environmental compliance and stewardship for the Porcupine Operations while being the primary contact for regulators and other external parties.
Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance of the Porcupine Operations and coordinating the implementation of permit conditions:
- Ensure compliance with all permits and approvals for the Porcupine Operations.
- Support the environmental permitting program for projects and operations and leading the associated environmental studies and models.
- Develop and implement the environmental monitoring programs for the Porcupine Operations including air, water, dust, and waste.
- Review and interpret monitoring data to ensure compliance with legal and other requirements and facilitate the implementation of recommendations for improvements or actions.
- Lead the external and internal reporting requirements and ensure the reports are comprehensive, reviewed, approved and submitted promptly.
- First point of contact for the regulatory agencies and other external parties, professionally represent the company with government inspections/investigations, and be available for emergency after hour support.
- Lead the planning, scheduling, and coordinating of the regulatory environmental emergency drills and scenarios.
- Ensure that all of the environmental programs, plans and procedures are up to date and reviewed on a set frequency.
- Support the coordination of field sampling and monitoring programs.
- Manage environmental events by ensuring they are reported and investigated as per the requirements and that recommendations to prevent reoccurrences are carried through.
- Coordinate the annual budget preparation, monthly accruals, and forecast.
Environmental Stewardship and Supervision
- Develop and implement the environmental training for all employees and business partners for the Porcupine Operations.
- Maintain a positive and productive relationship with other departments for the Porcupine Operations through open communication and visibility in the field.
- Perform and lead the department to conduct workplace health, safety and environmental inspections for the Porcupine Operations.
- Directly supervise and instruct the Environmental Coordinators who are responsible for the Environmental Technologists, Environmental Technicians, and Summer or Co-Op Students.
- Supervise and instruct contractors, consultants, or other external parties as needed.
Training and Education
- B.Sc. in Environmental or other related Environmental Engineering field. M.Sc. an asset.
- 5-10 years in the environmental and mining industry or related experience with exposure to formal Environmental Management systems, compliance, and permitting aspects.
- Must be able to take a practical approach to environmental management to support ongoing operations and growth.
- 3-5 years leading or supervising environmental teams including coordinators technicians, students, contractors, and consultants.
- Effective communication and organization skills.
- Strong PC skills and experience with various field equipment.
- Ability to interact with internal staff and external agencies.
- Valid G driver’s license.
- Familiarity with ArcGIS, SiteScan, MonitorPro,,and other monitoring and reporting systems.
