Position Summary
The Field Engineer supports the successful execution of renewable energy construction projects by serving as the on-site technical resource throughout design, construction, and closeout. This role bridges engineering and field operations—coordinating with project management, subcontractors, and design teams to ensure projects are built safely, efficiently, and to specification. Typical projects range from 3MW–10MW with budgets of $2M or more. The position is project-based and requires travel to assigned job sites.
Essential Responsibilities
Project Planning & Coordination
- Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and design documents to support construction planning and field execution.
- Coordinate project documentation, including RFI’s, submittals, change orders, addendums, and as-built drawings, ensuring timely processing and distribution.
- Support development and review of change orders and engineering updates in coordination with design and project management teams.
- Produce material takeoffs and Bills of Quantities (BOQ) for procurement and cost tracking.
- Contribute technical input to project schedules and assist in monitoring progress against milestones.
Field Engineering & Construction Support
- Act as the site-based liaison between design engineers, project management, and field teams during construction.
- Conduct regular site visits to monitor installation quality, quantities, and safety compliance.
- Support the Quality Manager and Site Manager by reviewing field work for adherence to specifications, standards, and QA/QC requirements.
- Track and report daily production, installed quantities, and work progress (POD reports).
- Oversee installation activities for mechanical, electrical, and civil scopes, ensuring compliance with engineering drawings and applicable codes.
- Support commissioning, performance testing (FAT/SAT), and turnover documentation.
Technical & Documentation Support
- Generate and maintain redlines, as-built documentation, job books, and O&M manuals.
- Support EPC execution plans and ensure technical documentation aligns with project and client requirements.
- Assist with system troubleshooting, technical evaluations, and design optimization during construction.
- Collaborate with the project team on cost-to-complete (CTC) tracking, progress reporting, and client-facing updates.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and model safe work practices; assist with job hazard analyses and ensure corrective actions are implemented immediately.
- Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as utility interconnection standards.
- Support sustainability goals and best practices in renewable project design and execution.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to develop and evaluate options in fast-paced field environments.
- Effective communication skills (written and verbal) to interact with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Proficiency in MS Office, project scheduling tools (e.g., MS Project), and construction management software (e.g., Procore, Sage).
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, PVsyst, or other engineering design software preferred.
- Familiarity with NEC, IEEE, ASCE, and renewable energy industry standards.
- Ability to travel and work on remote project sites as required.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
- 1+ years of experience in renewable energy or heavy civil construction (solar, wind, or energy storage preferred).
- Experience in field engineering, project coordination, or site-based project management.
- PE or EIT certification preferred, but not required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with utility-scale renewable energy projects.
- Understanding of permitting, grid interconnection, and energy storage systems.
