Job Summary:
This is a paid internship program. Intern will perform professional work related to biological and water quality monitoring in freshwater and estuarine systems including Outstanding Florida Springs and associated spring runs, lakes, and the St. Johns River. This internship will provide an opportunity to develop skills relevant for entry level positions in environmental sciences.
Position includes spending time in the outdoors in challenging weather conditions, with occasional office tasks. Access to survey sites may involve boating, kayaking, and/or wading in shallow water up to waist deep. Training for fieldwork, office tasks, and safety protocols will be provided. Job duties include:
- Field work to identify and characterize emergent vegetation and submerged aquatic vegetation communities.
- Assess biological and water quality conditions, including but not limited to invasive species presence, algal presence, water clarity, and level of disturbance.
- Utilize accepted ESRI and Microsoft software for data entry and collection tasks associated with the responsibilities listed above.
- Provide information to senior management, collaborate with team members, and serve as District representative.
Minimum Qualifications:
College or university student currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program and either attending classes or participating in a work experience program sanctioned by the individual school and at least a junior level (senior level preferred) studying in a related field.
All students must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher.
Must be able to attend plant calibration training day, typically held during the last week of May.
Preferred Qualifications:
Interest in aquatic plants and natural systems, experience conducting plant surveys, experience with scientific data collection, experience working outdoors.
Additional Details:
The Summer 2025 internship will run for 13 weeks. The work is 20 hours per week.
Availability and schedule will be discussed when contacted for an interview.
Intern will produce reports/presentation to highlight accomplishments.
Working Environment:
Mostly office environment, sitting at a desk and operating a personal computer to produce work products with some field visits as required. Field visits would require enduring outdoor environments in uncomfortable temperatures, inclement weather, and remote locations.
Salary: $15.00/hour
