Introduction

Our client is a leading provider of solar PV solutions, specializing in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. They are now seeking a Solar PV O&M Technician to join the Asset Management Division in Sandton, Johannesburg. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting solar PV systems to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.

This is a hybrid role - part time in office and remote working. 

Duties & Responsibilities

Strings

  • Diagnose and repair string faults on solar plants.
  • Use string testers to identify and communicate faults effectively.
  • Utilize monitoring portals to detect and manually repair faulty strings.
  • Replace string home runs and repair DC cable issues, including MC4 connectors.

Communications

  • Conduct fault-finding on communications boards and equipment.
  • Identify and resolve communication component failures.
  • Monitor 3G sim card data availability.
  • Assess inverter performance through online portals and identify issues.
  • Interpret inverter error codes and performance deviations.

Inverters

  • Safely and efficiently work with multiple inverter brands (SMA, Huawei, etc.).
  • Update inverter firmware and download event logs.
  • Use manufacturer software and interfaces for troubleshooting.
  • Log inverter faults, engage with manufacturer support teams, and manage case resolutions.
  • Physically replace faulty inverters and coordinate with manufacturers.

General Maintenance

  • Conduct two visual inspections per site annually.
  • Replace damaged solar panels and troubleshoot electrical issues.
  • Replace breakers, AC cables, and electrical components safely.
  • Optimize solar plant performance by diagnosing and resolving issues.
  • Manage and maintain the O&M vehicle, including fueling and servicing.
  • Work with control systems and relays for breaker operations during load shedding.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Qualified electrician with a Wireman’s License and 2-3 years of experience with PV systems.
  • Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering (N.Dip / B.Tech / B.Eng)
  • Experience working with communications equipment such as 3G routers, ethernet switches, and dataloggers.
  • Proficient in using multimeters, solar string testers, and inverter software.
  • Working-at-heights certificate preferred.
