Job Description
Summary
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Technical Services, the Director, Energy Storage & Grid Technology is responsible for providing technical leadership to the business to advise on the further deployment of energy storage as one of the technology drivers to support the growth strategy of the business. The incumbent will have technical expertise on all matters related to Battery Energy Storage Systems (“BESS”) and will advise business operations globally on their project development and acquisition initiatives that involve BESS technology. The incumbent will also provide reference and support to the business on emerging forms (excl. pumped hydro) of energy storage. The incumbent will also provide a level of support and expertise on grid technology, such as intelligent grid devices, evolving switchgear and transformer designs, as well as power system fundamentals.
Responsibilities
- Assess various BESS technologies for technical performance, safety and useful life, as well as current and projected technology costs
- Track emerging technology associated with BESS over the next five (5) years and provide a view on the likely future evolution of energy storage technology and its commercial possibilities
- Conduct comparative technical and commercial analyses of various technologies and equipment suppliers available for the deployment of BESS
- Acquire and review optimisation analysis of microgrid/industrial/utility systems featuring BESS eg hybrid
- Share best practices across the business that apply to the design and delivery of BESS facilities
- Support the business in layout, configuration and equipment selection for the design and development of BESS projects
- Work with the Investment team to assess opportunities to invest in energy storage facilities, technology providers and project pipelines for development
- Provide support to the business on power system study definition/delivery, grid technical specifications and other grid related technical challenges/opportunities in connecting renewable generation and BESS
- Provide technical support and direction to the business on grid related solutions, including grid forming options, smart grid devices, clean air switchgear, transformer health
- Stay current in government and market regulations impacting the deployment of energy storage facilities and their implications on the business strategy
- Maintain strong networks with industry representatives and key stakeholders around BESS to promote Brookfield as an important participant in the deployment of energy storage technology
- Provide technical support to the global procurement team
Requirements
- In-depth technical competency and track record with energy projects;
- Proven technical competency in electrical engineering and experience with design and construction of electrical apparatus and energy facilities, such as BESS or similar
- Knowledge of leading key equipment suppliers of BESS systems in Europe, North America and China, including warranty and service frameworks currently in place in the market
- Good understanding of BESS interfaces, including grid/market services and evolving electric vehicle charging integration
- Broad knowledge of the various components impacting the design and integration of BESS, including racking, temperature management, enclosure design, inverter design and control
- Knowledge of global technical standards that will support BESS rollout
- Experience in conducting due diligence of energy projects and technologies to support project financing initiatives
- Knowledge of smart grid technology and evolving grid connected equipment
- Hands-on operational experience with energy projects incl. performance analysis
- Ability to develop strong business relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong influencing skills: ability to present points of view effectively and gain support for their position, balancing technical and business considerations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong team approach: ability to work with different teams across the organisation to ensure sound management of key technical considerations with respect to the deployment and acquisition of energy storage technology
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and to adapt quickly to changing priorities
- Self-motivated, with a high level of initiative
- Some international travel required
Qualifications/Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a recognized professional designation (such as P. Eng.) or in another technical or relevant related discipline
- Minimum five (10) years of experience with the design, development or integration of industrial/commercial, campus or grid BESS, or comparable energy projects
- Knowledge and experience of “behind the meter” electricity supply or battery manufacturing is a benefit
