Job Description and Duties

Under general direction of the IT Manager I, the incumbent serves as the Chief of the Automation & Integration Branch, which assists, coordinates, standardizes, and guide the development of effective and efficient IT automation solutions to strategically assist local clients in their initiatives to solve and automate business processes and with the Procurement of their IT needs. The branch is comprised of IT professionals in various IT classification levels, who are responsible for network and telecommunication administration, server support, web and application development, technical service and audio visual support. The incumbent oversees complex IT functions and projects which include in depth systems analysis, design and administration, systems integration, testing, maintenance and operations, IT procurement and asset management. The incumbent has supervisory responsibilities for standards, processes, procedures for the analysis, design, implementation, maintenance, operation and procurement of IT hardware and software, deployment and support for an array of software and hardware technologies. The incumbent provides full first line supervision of staff responsible for all activities associated with the day-to-day IT operations of the Fresno District Office and surrounding area.

Working Conditions

Position located at 1352 W. Olive Ave. Fresno


This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

If not working remotely, the employee will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting using a personal computer. The employee may be required to work for extended periods of time in a computer room that maintains an approximate temperature of 70 degrees.

The employee may be required to travel. When available, a State vehicle will be provided. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle. If the employee utilizes their own personal vehicle, they may be reimbursed for travel expenses.

Some weekend or after-hours may be required. The employee must carry a cell phone and respond to calls after hours.


New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

1. Describe your Information Technology (IT) education, training and experience that has prepared you for the position of IT Supervisor II.

2. Describe your experience and provide examples of managing staff as a technical lead or project manager overseeing a complex IT project. Explain how you prioritized work, guided your team, addressed challenges, and supported employees in achieving project goals. Highlight any accomplishments related to team management and project success.

3. Describe and provide examples of your leadership experience, including techniques of building, organizing, and motivating groups, and your ability to work effectively with a variety of peers, management, vendors, customers, and stakeholders.
