Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Supervisor), the incumbent performs difficult mechanical engineering design, specification preparation, estimating, and inspection work involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of Department facilities and systems. Facilities include: storm water drainage pumping plants, sewage lift stations, vehicular tunnels, movable bridges, safety roadside rest areas, highway maintenance stations, equipment repair shops, toll plazas, truck weigh and inspection facilities, office buildings, water and wastewater facilities, and other transportation-related facilities. Systems include open and enclosed gear trains, drive shafts, chains & wire ropes, pneumatics, hydraulics, motors, controls, machinery brakes, HVAC, fans, pumps, engines, and site security. Traveling and driving to various locations and field inspections is required. Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required when operating a state-owned, leased, rented, or personal vehicle to perform these duties.

Working Conditions

Position located at 111 Grand Ave. Oakland CA, Alameda County

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

    Knowledge of: • Mechanical engineering methods, materials, and equipment used in the design, construction and maintenance of transportation-related facilities. • Engineering fundamentals and mathematics • Various codes, safety orders, and regulations governing the design and installation of mechanical equipment. • Designing and preparing plans, layout, specification writing, and estimates for heating, ventilating, instrumentation, pumping, lubrication, piping, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, sanitary, pressure tank, and drainage systems. • Mechanical methods of power and material transmission. • Thermodynamics, and hydraulics pertaining to the design of water systems, pressure tanks, pumps, sewer systems, and other similar installations. • Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD). Ability to: • Accurately perform mechanical design work. • Prepare and check plans, specifications, and estimates for heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, sanitary, water, and drainage systems. • Accurately convey technical engineering information in English both verbally and in writing. • Prepare correspondence and make effective oral and written reports. • Use a computer workstation with software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and FileMaker Pro. • Use Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software such as MicroStation. • Analyze situations accurately. Adopt and take effective action. • Inspect field construction operations or make field inspections and tests of mechanical installations • Direct or make construction and maintenance inspections of mechanical installations. • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with employees and with those contacted in the work and whose work is being inspected. • Lead the work of others.
