The Opportunity
In 2023, George Hanley (Donor) established the Paul H. Benson Professorship in Sustainability at the University of Dayton with a commitment of funds to establish an endowment in support. This fund will support three-year professorship terms for new or continuing tenure track faculty members, with the aim to recruit or retain outstanding new talent and advance the University’s ability to develop sustainability educational and research programs. With this gift, George honors Paul Benson’s 38-year career as professor of philosophy and provost at the University.
The period of this appointment is three years and is nonrenewable. The appointment is a 9-month position, from August 16, 2025 through May 15, 2028 with a one, three-credit course load reduction per year and additional funding to help cover support of academic research, scholarship or creative activity goals in this position, or travel expenses to support research presentations at professional conferences.
Expectations
- Advance academic research, scholarship or creative activity as proposed and agreed upon in professorship goals.
- Support and promote research, teaching, and student learning in sustainability at the University of Dayton.
- Bring visibility and value to sustainability, both within the curriculum and within the broader intellectual life of the University of Dayton community
- Maintain a record of scholarly productivity reflected by the standards within your discipline.
- Maintain excellence in teaching assigned courses and load. Teaching assignments each term are to be approved by the department chairperson, following consultation with the unit dean.
- While the Professorship is a unique scholarly position within the University, the holder is expected to contribute service per the tenure expectations outlined in the department, unit and university guidelines. Questions about the appropriate extent of such service should be directed to the unit dean and chair.
- You will be expected to attend and participate in relevant department meetings and work collegially with other members of the department.
Selection Process
The professorship holder will be selected through a competitive process as determined by the Provost's Office in consultation with the Office of Human Resources. Eligible faculty from all academic unit are encouraged to submit an application for the professorship.

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
- Current scholarship or creative activity in sustainability or related topics, and progress towards tenure
- Record of innovative teaching, research or service
- Demonstrated participation in innovative practices and initiatives in sustainability
- Commitment to sustainability as part of our Catholic and Marianist mission of the University of Dayton

- A current CV
- A cover letter that includes
- candidate’s interest in the position that specifically addresses the required qualifications for the professorship
- A proposal outlining the academic research, scholarship or creative activity to be pursued during the professorship, and that will contribute to the candidate’s tenure process. This proposal may include (but is not limited to):
- Brief description of theoretical/literature foundations and description of the relevance of the project to the most important issues facing sustainability education, scholarship or research today
- Anticipated academic research, scholarship or creative activity to be undertaken
- Expected publications/presentations on the work
- Plan for communication/dissemination of academic research, scholarship or creative activity locally, nationally or globally
- Evaluation plans to include annual metrics and final impact assessments at the conclusion of the appointment
- Copies of representative professional materials relevant to the proposal
- Contact information for two professional references
- At least one reference must come from a current faculty or administrative staff member at the University of Dayton. The second reference could come from an additional faculty or administrative staff member at the University of Dayton or from a faculty or administrative staff person from outside of the institution.
- Both references must be able to address the candidate’s qualifications for the position
