JOB SUMMARY: This position is a Range Technician, GS- 0455-5 working in Sherwood, OR for the R1-Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. MAJOR DUTIES: This is a temporary appointment intended for seasonal work that is less than 6 months or 1040 hours from the date of appointment/service year. It is expected this position will be terminated upon completion of the seasons work. The agency may non-competitively rehire an eligible temporary seasonal worker in subsequent years who works less than 6 months or 1040 hours in their service year. As a Range Technician your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists with the implementation of established natural resource management projects and identifies exotic plant species at the site and assesses the degree of infestation using a GPS receiver to mark location. Uses hand tools, chainsaws, and herbicides to remove or treat identified exotic plants. When herbicide use is indicated, determines the appropriate amount of chemical needed for treatment and mixes the chemical with a dispersant for use in a spray mechanism. Gathers pre-treatment data, including GPS files, weather information, herbicide type and method, digital photos, and other relevant information prior to treatment applications. Makes field observations of exotic plant conditions. Evaluates observed conditions and problems and makes preliminary determination on the cause of problem noted. Provides results to higher level specialist for analysis. After initial. treatment work, assesses the effectiveness of treatments, evaluates quality assurance compliance and may perform re-vegetation and/or restoration work (seeding, planting, and fertilizing) as needed.
