JOB SUMMARY: The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is May to November but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May/June 2025 MAJOR DUTIES: Work on and perform all tasks related to the safe, appropriate and efficient operation of a traditionally and square-rigged replica sailing vessel, according to USCG, OSHA and other applicable standards. Operate small watercraft to inspect lines and moorings; for volunteer training and engagement; to assist with ship maneuvering when getting underway and docking. Assist journeyman level workers in carpentry and rigging including tasks related to fabrication, installation and maintenance of ship parts. Work with crew, ship/NPS staff, riggers, carpenters and volunteers in the accomplishment of sailing, rigging and operational tasks, as needed and requested. Work aloft at a height of up to 120' comfortably and safely, according to OSHA fall arrest guidelines. Area Information This position is located at Salem Maritime National Historic Site. The person hired for this position will participate in a wide variety of rigging and carpentry work on the replica tall ship Friendship of Salem. They will regularly assist with other vessel-related work and will less frequently assist at Salem Maritime and Saugus Iron Works National Historic Sites with other tasks. These 2 parks are managed by one team. Salem Maritime National Historic Site is located in Salem, MA on Salem Harbor. The park is approximately 20 miles NE of Boston, MA and has a commuter rail stop in Salem that is an approximate 10-minute walk from the site. Established in 1938 as a unit of the National Park Service, Salem Maritime National Historic Site preserves and provides public inspiration on the maritime history of New England and the United States. The Park includes historic structures such as the Custom House, the West India Goods Store, the 18th century Derby House, the 17th century Narbonne House, three historic wharves and the sailing vessel Friendship of Salem. The Park also operates a Visitor Center in downtown Salem to orient visitors to maritime entities, early settlement, leather and textile industry sites as well as events in Salem and Essex County. Friendship of Salem is a full-scale replica of a 1797 East-Indiaman merchant ship. Construction of the modern three-masted, square-rigged sailing ship began in 1996 in Albany, NY and was completed in Salem, MA around 2000. Friendship of Salem is a replica with 171 feet of sparred length and 340-ton displacement, with a beam of 34 feet and draft of 11 feet. The vessel is fully rigged, with the tallest of the ship's three masts reaching a height of 115 feet. She regularly carries 11 square sails and 6 fore and aft sails, for an approximate total sail area of 9000 square feet. Friendship of Salem's hull is of laminate cold-molded construction, and the rigging is primarily Kevlar and polyester line. The National Park Service offers a range of tours, programs and demonstrations about Friendship of Salem and related history topics as a dockside attraction throughout the year and plans to resume occasional sailing programs on at the completion of current repair project. Pedrick Storehouse, a re-constructed historic building on the wharf near the ship serves as a rigging and carpentry shop. Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site is the site of the first integrated ironworks in North America (1646-1648). The site includes a reconstructed blast furnace, forge and rolling and slitting mill, a restored 17th century house and museum. The site also includes natural resources related to the Saugus River.
