Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the Party Chief administers professional land survey tasks in the Field Branch of the Land Surveys Division. The incumbent plans and organizes the work of a land surveys field crew; coordinates field survey activities with Caltrans construction inspectors, design engineers, and contractors; and performs a wide variety of difficult and complex professional surveying work while exercising independent professional judgment in responsible charge assignments.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a(n) California Land Surveyors' License License. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired.

Possession of a valid California Land Surveyors' License. A Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) - Applicants are required to submit a SOQ. The SOQ is a discussion of how an applicant’s education, training, experience, and skills meet the criteria in the duty statement to qualify the candidate for the position. The one-page SOQ must be typed in size 11 font. Resumes and cover letters will not take place of the SOQ. Failure to include and complete the SOQ may result in disqualification for interview.

The SOQ will address the candidate's experience in the following areas:
1. Demonstrated experience as a land surveys lead-worker. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment including field and office experience. Working with public and state agencies, contractors, and the public.
2. Demonstrated field experience performing H&V control, boundary, Digital Terrain Model (DTM) topographic, monitoring, aerial photogrammetric and construction surveys.
3. Demonstrated experience to balance multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines, organize tools and equipment, maintain records, track schedules and manage staff.
4. Knowledge of Land Surveying techniques for both field and office, mathematical principles and concepts.
5. Demonstrated experience working with software including Civil3D, Microstation, TopoDOT, Trimble Businss Center and Trimble Access, Microsoft Office suite, and any Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
6. Demonstrated experience working with various field surveying systems including Terrestrial, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)
7. Demonstrated Office Experience, including Digital Terrain Model processing, point cloud registration and extraction, Record Map preparation, boundary determination, deed writing, record research, construction plan interpretation
