The Opportunity…
This is a paid 6 month construction internship with GRID Alternatives
North Valley designed to launch or advance a sustainable career in
solar. Construction interns (CI) work under the supervision of
installation crews to install solar electric systems across the target
territory. Interns gain authentic solar work experience, a good
reference, potential corporate and nonprofit networking opportunities,
and gain valuable technical and professional work skills. The Solar
Construction Intern will work under the direct supervision of the
Solar Installation Training Supervisor.
Activities for this internship will include, but are not limited to:

Assist Construction staff with installing solar electric systems.
Including but not limited to: bending conduit, working with
junction boxes, penetrating roofs, installing racking systems,
climbing up and down ladders, and working with electrical
equipment Bending, reaching, kneeling is required for all jobs.
90% of the job will be to assist with residential solar
installations.

Assist Construction staff with staging, loading, and unloading
equipment, including packing and unpacking parts, boxes, and bins
from trucks/vans/trailers before and after installation projects.

Assist Construction staff with receiving equipment and deliveries
and picking up equipment and materials.

Participate in career planning and placement activities.

Other job duties as assigned may include: assisting with site
visits, permitting, inspections, participating in Outreach and
Development tasks, attending meetings, data entry, filing,
answering homeowner and volunteer questions, talking to the news
media, and generally participating in activities necessary to make
solar happen for income-qualified families.
What you need to bring to this role...

General construction knowledge, experience, and skills

Passion for GRID’s mission related to renewable energy, community
development, green jobs, and/or helping families and communities
in need

Highly reliable, accountable, and detail-oriented

Self-starter and ability to work independently as well as in a team

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (ability to work
well with co-workers, volunteers and clients, ability to represent
GRID Alternatives positively)

Strong teamwork, organizational, multi-tasking, and
decision-making skills

Flexibility and willingness to embrace change, go the extra mile,
and bring ideas and energy to a rapidly evolving organization

Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations

Comfortable with computers (MS Office, databases, Gmail/Google apps
a plus)

Ability to lift, push and pull up to 70 lbs. and familiarity with
proper lifting procedures

Ability to ascend and descend ladders to reach rooftops and install
solar

Ability to work an 8 hour shift Monday - Friday (summer hours are
5:30am - 2:00pm; winter hours are 6:30am - 3:00pm); Occasionally
available for overtime, as well as some weekends and rarely
overnight stays throughout the target territory and beyond. GRID
Alternatives provides travel reimbursement and per diem

Requires work outdoors in inclement weather conditions: hot/cold,
windy, low visibility, smoky (all within OSHA limits and with
proper use of PPE, keeping health and safety in mind)

Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable vehicle
required

Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background screen

Available to commit to the full internship program duration (6
months)
It would be great if you also had...

Previous volunteer experience with GRID Alternatives and/or
Installation Basics Training (IBT) graduate
-
Experience in training and/or working with volunteers
-
PV system installation experience
-
Bilingual English / Spanish / Other
Where you will sit and the places you may go…
This position may rarely require up to 25% out-of-town travel to
regional offices and special projects such as company-wide
celebrations, team building exercises, etc. Availability to work nights
and weekends may very rarely be required.
GRID Alternatives may provide vehicles for work travel and/or travel
reimbursement for personal vehicle use. In this instance, applicants
must hold a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.

experience within the pay band ($19-$24.03 per hour).
