The Environmental and Safety Manager will oversee the development and implementation of safety, health, environmental, and sustainability programs at The Client’s Ontario, California facility. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, fostering a strong safety culture, and advancing sustainability initiatives. The successful candidate will lead safety and environmental compliance efforts, manage regulatory relationships, and champion sustainability programs aligned with The Client’s goals for a better, shared future.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Culture Development
- Foster a workplace environment that prioritizes employee safety through proactive initiatives and effective leadership.
- Build and maintain a robust and engaged Safety Committee to address safety concerns and promote safe work practices.
- Manage workers’ compensation cases, including communication with employees, medical professionals, and insurance administrators.
Environmental Management
- Oversee environmental compliance, including wastewater management, hazardous waste disposal, and air quality standards (SCAQMD).
- Ensure adherence to storm-water, industrial hygiene, and other environmental regulatory requirements.
- Track and manage the facility’s environmental impact, including water and energy use, recycling, and carbon emissions.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with EPA, Cal OSHA, and DTSC regulations.
- Prepare for and manage plant emergency situations, including crisis response and communication with government agencies.
- Develop and implement risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential safety and environmental hazards.
Sustainability Leadership
- Lead initiatives to improve sustainability, including energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction.
- Monitor, track, and report on sustainability performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.
- Engage employees and leadership in sustainability programs to foster an environmentally responsible culture.
Training and Development
- Design and deliver training programs for safety, environmental, and sustainability management systems.
- Maintain ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications, ensuring compliance with standards and addressing audit findings.
- Translate safety and sustainability goals into actionable plans for all levels of the organization.
Leadership and Collaboration
- Supervise one direct report and indirectly lead the entire facility on safety, environmental, and security activities.
- Collaborate with the leadership team to address safety and environmental concerns and implement corrective actions.
- Represent the facility in discussions with state and local regulatory agencies.
The role requires the ability to work cross-functionally with diverse teams, manage complex regulatory requirements, and drive organizational change to achieve The Client’s environmental and safety objectives.
Requirements
Education
- A bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences, Occupational Safety Management, or a related discipline is required.
- Preferred: Advanced degree or additional certifications in relevant fields.
Certifications
- Required: Registered Environmental Manager (REM) or equivalent environmental certification.
- Preferred: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other applicable safety certifications.
Experience
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in safety, environmental processes, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience with OSHA, DOT, EPA regulatory requirements is preferred.
- Proven ability to manage site-specific environmental impact programs, including wastewater, hazardous waste, and sustainability initiatives.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of procedures to identify, evaluate, and mitigate workplace hazards (physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic).
- Expertise in implementing and maintaining ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
- Familiarity with California-specific regulations, including Cal OSHA and DTSC hazardous waste requirements.
