This position is located at the Prince William County Landfill in Manassas and plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations through field inspections, performing tests, collecting samples, and maintaining electronic databases and records. We are looking for a candidate who embodies integrity, attention to detail, and a passion for environmental stewardship. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of full-time fieldwork experience performing environmental compliance monitoring and regulatory data collection. 

About This Role:

As an Environmental Compliance Specialist, you will work both independently and as part of a team under the general supervision of the Senior Environmental Program Manager. The role requires reliability, sound ethical judgment, and adherence to policies and regulations while interacting with the public and a wide range of stakeholders. Responsibilities of this role include:

  • Monitoring landfill gas collection systems, conducting gas and odor inspections, and reporting findings;
  • Performing stormwater inspections, monitoring, sampling, and reporting;
  • Conducting erosion and sediment control inspections and ensuring compliance;
  • Performing commercial truck and random waste load inspections;
  • Operating, maintaining, and calibrating field equipment and ensuring proper inventory;
  • Maintaining and updating electronic databases with timely and accurate data entry;
  • Preparing regulatory documentation, reports, and correspondence;
  • Understanding and adhering to environmental regulations and procedures; and
  • Communicating effectively with County staff, regulated parties, vendors, businesses, and the public.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Experience: A minimum of two years of full-time fieldwork experience in environmental regulatory compliance or regulatory data collection is required.

Preferences:

  • Minimum two years of full-time fieldwork experience performing environmental compliance inspections or landfill environmental monitoring is preferred.
  • Experience interpreting and administering environmental regulations, rules, and procedures is preferred.
  • Computer skills are preferred, including work experience maintaining electronic databases and performing accurate data entry.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, and Excel, is preferred.
  • Strong skills and experience in completing and writing formal reports are preferred.
  • Work experience calibrating, operating, and maintaining field sampling and analysis equipment is preferred.
  • Extensive work experience interacting directly with the public both verbally and in writing, particularly in a regulatory or compliance setting, is preferred.

Special Requirements: 

  • Driving Requirement: Having and maintaining a valid driver’s license is a requirement of the position. This job also requires driving a County vehicle and operating equipment such as a skid steer and forklift.
  • Essential Service Requirement: This position is designated as an essential employee. Responding to emergencies, inclement weather, and other issues that may impact facility operations outside of regular working hours, including on holidays and weekends, is required.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirement: This job is a safety-sensitive position that requires wearing personal protective equipment, including but not limited to safety shoes, safety vest, and hard hat.
  • Physical Requirements: This job requires lifting up to 50 pounds, exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to move objects. The work is generally performed in both inside and outside environments and may be exposed to vibrations, intense noises, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, inadequate lighting, and poor ventilation. The ability to safely work in inclement weather and around vehicular traffic and heavy equipment is required. The job also requires the ability to routinely walk long distances over rough terrain in noisy and dusty conditions, as well as climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
  • Pre-employment Requirement: Successfully passing a pre-employment physical examination is a condition of employment for this position.

Work Schedule: 

The typical work schedule for this position is 37.5 hours per week, with eligibility for overtime and holiday pay. Working some weekends is required. Shift days and hours are subject to change based on business needs. Working outside of regularly scheduled hours with little or no notice may be required in the event of inclement weather or a department or County emergency.

Starting Salary Range:

$31.22 to $36.98 hourly
