Part- Time Custodial Aide
Job Summary
Assist the custodial team in maintaining the cleanliness of zoo grounds and public buildings to ensure a clean, safe, and pleasant environment for visitors and staff.
Primary Job Functions
Maintain Cleanliness of Zoo Grounds
- Collect and dispose of trash and recycling from zoo grounds, pathways, parking lots, and public areas.
- Sweep and blow walkways and shelters.
- Collect and dispose of loose litter while moving through the park, including outdoor picnic areas.
- Empty and clean trash cans.
- Clear debris from pathways and public spaces.
- Monitor and report any damage, hazards, or safety concerns within the park.
- Prepare facilities for events, such as delivery of additional waste receptacles.
Maintain Cleanliness of Buildings and Exhibit Public Spaces
- Perform routine custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting.
- Clean guest access areas, including doors, windows, walkways, viewing areas, railings, and parking areas.
- Wipe down and disinfect high-touch surfaces such as doors, handrails, and counters.
- Wash windows, walls, woodwork and blinds. Dust, clean and polish chairs, tables, shelves and other furniture and equipment.
- Operate various custodial equipment such as auto scrubbers, imops, and wet vac systems.
- Remove trash and recyclables from buildings and dispose of them properly.
- Practice discretion in regard to visibility of sensitive documentation.
- Clean and sanitize classrooms, breakrooms, and other communal areas.
- Deliver and restock janitorial supplies such as toilet paper, soap, and paper towels.
- Ensure all entryways, hallways, and common areas remain clean and safe.
- Report any building maintenance issues, such as plumbing, HVAC, or electrical concerns
Guest Service
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards of janitorial care and of safety precautions and PPE.
- Has good knowledge of hazard communications including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and maintains product identifiers on all products used in facilities.
- Properly mix cleaning products according to the manufacturer’s guidance and maintain dilution stations as directed.
- Maintain a pleasant demeanor and positive attitude while working under any conditions.
- Form and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, customers, and team participants.
- Provide customer service to the zoo-defined customers – collections, conservation, contractors, co-workers, donors, students, professional colleagues, vendors, visitors & volunteers.
- Ensure the public is safe while at the zoo.
- Answer radio calls in a professional manner.
Secondary Job Functions
- Follows all safety protocols and area SOP’s while working near construction or repairs, and around delicate, wild and potentially dangerous animals. Completes required training and safely operates all zoo required equipment for completion of job duties.
- Uses time efficiently to complete assigned tasks. Actively seeks ways to streamline processes and stays open to new ideas and approaches.
- Represent the Zoo and/or Sedgwick County at various offsite events such as regional, national, and international conferences, meetings, community events, outreach programs, etc.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Must be available to work weekends and some evenings.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in custodial work or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid US driver’s license without restrictions.
Working Environment/Conditions
The employee is subject to activities that occur in both inside and outside environmental conditions. The employee is subject to any potential hazards of working in a zoo. The employee is subject to potential hazards of working with and near dangerous animals. The employee may be exposed to zoonotic diseases. Employee must be able to work a schedule that may involve working weekends, holidays, or after regular work shifts.
Physical requirements
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May be required to walk or stand for extended periods of time and do repetitive tasks with few breaks within indoor and outdoor environments. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
