As a Kangaroo Krossing Attendant, you will maintain a safe environment for both the animals and the guests. You will perform a variety of tasks related to the husbandry of the animals and maintenance of their habitats, while providing educational information to the public.
The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
Kangaroo Krossing Attendant is an entry-level position into animal care. You will maintain a safe environment for both the animals and the guests and perform various tasks related to the handling and care of animals and their habitats. You will also provide educational information to the public through structured, professional presentations and informal conversations.
As a Kangaroo Krossing Attendant, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Welcome each guest upon entering Kangaroo Krossing.
- Clean and maintain animal enclosures, service areas, and holding facilities daily using a rake, shovel, wheelbarrow, and other tools as required.
- Observe, evaluate, and report animal behavior and condition of animals to the manager or senior animal care specialist.
- Assist in treating zoo animals following instructions of a manager or zoo veterinarian.
- Participate in enrichment program as well as operant conditioning training program (as assigned).
- Perform routine and special duties involved in the daily care and maintenance of animals in Kangaroo Krossing.
- Exchange information with the management staff and coworkers regularly.
- Maintain a safe environment for both animals and guests, to include securing animals and their enclosures.
- Assist in the maintenance of animal habitats.
- Assist with animal transfers.
- Provide educational information to the public throughout the day in a professional manner, to include informal conversations and formal chats.
- Assist Mammals East staff in other areas of the department with animal husbandry or special projects.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- For the safety of our animals, zoo crew, and guests, you must be able to work safely around delicate, wild, and dangerous animals.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relations with team members.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills preferred.
- Capable of presenting biological and historical information about animals professionally.
- Responsible for completing all online training courses by assigned deadlines.
- Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
- This position requires a valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License or a valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a Class "C" Texas Driver's License within 45 days of becoming employed.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred
- Must be able to work in varying climate and weather conditions (rain, snow, hot, or cold).
- We are a year-round operation; this position requires a flexible schedule to work day, weekends, holidays, and occasionally special after-hours assignments.
