C40 is a network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s leading cities, who are working to deliver the urgent action needed right now to confront the climate crisis, and create a future where everyone, everywhere can thrive. Mayors of C40 cities are committed to using a science-based and people-focused approach to help the world limit global heating to 1.5°C and build healthy, equitable and resilient communities. Through a Global Green New Deal, mayors are working alongside a broad coalition of representatives from labour, business, the youth climate movement and civil society to go further and faster than ever before.
C40’s team of 400+ staff is based in offices in London, in New York, Johannesburg, Singapore, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris, and individual staff based across 25+ different locations.
The strategic direction of the organisation is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors, which is chaired by Mayor Sadiq Khan of London and Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr of Freetown. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the C40 Board of Directors, responsible for operational oversight. A regionally diverse management team, led by Executive Director Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40. C40’s three core strategic funders are Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation and Realdania.
Our international staff work with the C40 network under the leadership of city governments to deliver this mission. Using a data-driven approach, our team identifies and promotes the exchange of proven programmes and policies developed by cities; provides world-class research, technical expertise and access to key partners to deliver new programmes and policies with cities; and communicates cities’ individual achievements and collective leadership.

Department description
The C40 Communications team is responsible for strategically positioning C40 as one of the world’s most impactful climate organisations by celebrating the ambitious, equitable action underway in C40 cities and establishing our mayors as global leaders of the climate movement. Through our global communications we aim to shift the narrative and inspire real progress on the greatest challenge humanity is facing today.
Position Description
This role will be at the heart of C40’s communications team. The role will support the Director to undertake various exciting activities including co-leading on strategic communications, media and partnerships creating and executing communications activities, ensuring the delivery of key communications projects with other C40 teams and providing specific support to the Co-Chair’s communications.
The post holder will co-lead and undertake strategic communications activities and lead on special projects related to strategic communications work which advance climate change action all around the world.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Communications, Media, Partnerships and Co-Chair Communications
- Provide strategic advice and insight on content and messaging, ensuring consistency and alignment with organisational goals.
- Help develop organisational key messages and narrative that align with key audiences
- Work with the Director to increase the reach and impact of the Co-Chair through media and social media.
- Draft and/or copyedit communications materials including, but not limited to, thought leadership pieces, press releases, web content, and social media copy, ensuring high-quality content and alignment with key messages.
- Coordinate the delivery of communication plans, ensuring timely and effective execution.
- Provide strategic support on content and messaging, ensuring consistency and alignment with organisational goals.
- Manage special projects for the strategic communications, partnerships and media team, overseeing their planning, coordination, and successful completion.
- Contribute to the development of comprehensive communications plans, considering various channels and audiences.
- Support communications planning efforts more broadly, offering strategic insights and recommendations.
Project management tasks:
- Lead and manage the administrative systems and processes required to support the Strategic Communications team.
- Attend key internal and external meetings and support the Director of Strategic Communications, Media and Partnerships in follow-up actions and tracking of deliverables.
Person Specification
The post holder will be experienced in project management and have a background in communications, including:
- Strong experience in project management.
- Experience drafting key messages, press releases and other communications materials.
- Experience managing a wide range of projects.
- Experience in a range of topics and ability to learn and dive deep into new topics quickly.
- Excellent organisational skills and detail-oriented.
- Delivery-oriented, with problem-solving and strategic thinking capabilities and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated ability working with diverse cultures from around the world.
- Interested in a long-term career in working internationally on climate change in a global organisation.
- Strong English language skills
- Ability to speak other languages is desirable.
Other Requirements:
Applicants must already have the right to work in the listed locations. Moderate travel will be required as part of the role. The successful candidate should be able to work from the London office at least a few days a week.
