JOB SUMMARY: This position is located in Shenandoah National Park, in the Division of Natural and Cultural Resources. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a technical advisor and supervisor in fishery biology. The fishery biologist is responsible for program development and implementation dealing with the management and protection of aquatic and fishery resources and their habitat requirements MAJOR DUTIES: Designs, develops, and implements monitoring protocols for aquatic ecosystems and collaborates with other researchers to develop and conduct scientific research studies. Analyze long-term data and write scientific reports to support the management of aquatic ecosystems. Based on results of inventories, in-depth studies, and monitoring, develops and implements scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects to restore and/or maintain the integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Coordinates, develops, and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, the public, and those on adjacent lands to encourage and facilitate cooperative regional management strategies for the purposes of achieving broad ecosystem protection strategies and minimizing human impacts on the park's fish and aquatic resources. Supervises biologists with other technical expertise. Position Location: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience".
