JOB SUMMARY: This position is located at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection, Branch of Fire and Aviation. Twp positions are available. MAJOR DUTIES: Serves as wildland firefighter on a Helitack module crew. Performs helicopter crewmember duties such as: Prepares internal and/or external cargo loads, briefs passengers before takeoff, follows proper procedures for loading/unloading the helicopter, constructs helispots or landing areas, monitors dipsites, and prepares sling load sites. Works with higher-graded firefighters and receives on-the-job training, instruction, and orientation in helicopter operations to include accompanying the pilot on flights, providing radio communications to dispatch and/or ground firefighters, navigating with use of maps, and applying aviation safety regulations. May serve as a short-hauler, plastic sphere dispenser operator, and STEP (special technique entry/exit procedures) crew member. Performs or instructs others in preventative maintenance inspections and basic repairs of vehicles and equipment. Accomplishes emergency repairs as necessary to permit continued use of equipment. In those instances when the apparatus cannot be used effectively in suppressing the fire, the incumbent takes appropriate control action in attacking the fire. Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents. When positioning and deploying personnel and equipment, recommends best approaches and practices to use in protection of the values at risk. Responsible for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland, and prescribed fire, and all-hazard situations. May serve as a situational leader on wildland fires by directing the work of a small crew of firefighters in building firelines, burning out, mopping up, and patrolling firelines. During wildland fire and hazardous fuels management assignments, may provide on-the-job training opportunities and mentorship to lower graded firefighters on the use of tools and equipment. Career-Seasonal appointments are full-time, permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. Work schedule and periods of non-pay status are contingent upon funding and operational needs. On an annual basis, employee signs a "career-seasonal" agreement with the supervisor which defines the work schedule for that year. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 22 Bi-Weekly pay periods and be placed into non-pay time of 4 Bi-Weekly pay periods per year, with the work schedule determined upon appointment.
