This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 12 months that may be extended for 12 additional months without further competition. Salary: $44,227 (Step 01) to $57,496 (Step 10). NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. MAJOR DUTIES: As a Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) within the Western Ecological Research Center, some of your specific duties will include: Collect, record, summarize, organize or file wildlife data and specimens using a variety of standardized data collection procedures and equipment. Enter, verify, manage and manipulate data and data files in databases or geographic information systems. Oversee and train new technicians and field crews in standard field data collection and analytical techniques. Provide area orientation for contract and cooperating scientists and technicians. Maintain awareness of the scope, nature and status of projects in order to provide logistical support. Assist with verification of mathematical, statistical, and spatial computations. Perform or coordinate the repair and maintenance of research and support equipment such as tools, traps, sampling, monitoring, photographic and laboratory equipment, electronic devices and boat motors. Operate a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver. Operate and maintain outboard powered boats. Physical Demands The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring running, walking, or bending, walking/climbing ladders or scaffolds to observe, collect or record data. Work Environment The work environment varies from laboratory setting to field sites and offices. The work involves moderate risks and discomforts such as high noise levels and exposure to chemicals, adverse weather conditions, and extreme temperatures that may require following special safety procedures. Conditions of Employment of the USGS Watercraft Safety Program: Motorboat Operator Certification - You must be able to take and pass the USGS Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) within six (6) months of employment. CPR Certification - Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification for the duration of employment. First Aid Certification - Must be able to obtain and maintain Wilderness or Advanced First Aid certification for duration of employment.
